Where to go nearby: Henry Miller Memorial Library at McWay falls
This beloved 1930s inn is located in a narrow canyon of redwoods near Big Sur Village. Many of the rooms were built by the original Norwegian immigrant Helmuth deetjen. The rooms vary in size and style, but all have Norwegian interiors. They also come with different amenities such as woodstoves or private decks. You’re not here to enjoy modern conveniences, but rather a “back to basics” experience. The rooms have a single-wall design (read: no sound insulation) and the lack of WiFI or cell service is intentional to create a quiet, secluded atmosphere. unplugged atmosphere. Candlelit and antique filled, the restaurant serves comforting dishes like herb-roasted poultry for dinner or buttermilk pancakes for morning. The fern-filled ravine at the back of the property has a small water fall and Buddha statues. McWay Fall and the Henry Miller Memorial Library – a bohemian music venue and bookshop – are both within a short distance of the inn.
