    This Popular Colorado Ski Town Has Just Became The State’s 1st Dark Sky Destination

    Popular ski resort of Breckenridge, ColoradoThe first mountain ski resort in the state,, has just been certified dark sky.

    The designation was bestowed by DarkSky International The town was recognized for its efforts to preserve “its unique alpine landscape and natural environment” for future and current generations. The certification came after years of effort, which included adopting a strict outdoor lighting ordinance, upgrading outdated streetlamps, and requiring that new construction comply with dark-sky standards.

    Michael Rymer (a Colorado resident and the program manager for DarkSky International) said in a press release that the Rocky Mountain towns offer an incredible natural beauty. This is especially true when it comes the night sky. Breckenridge, as an International Dark Sky Community hopes to preserve and protect the night sky, both for its residents and visitors. DarkSky International is proud to certify Breckenridge as a major tourist destination, which will showcase the wonders and beauty of dark skies for visitors around the globe.
