Apple announced the launch of a digital passport for Apple Wallet. The Transportation Security Administration will accept this digital ID instead of a physical identification card for domestic flights. Apple announced this new feature on June 9 at its annual Worldwide Developers Conference.
This new change may make domestic travel easier, but the digital ID does not replace a passport. It can only be used to travel on domestic flights. The TSA will not accept it for international flights. It will still be required for international travelers to show a passport to board the flight.
Apple’s website says: “When you present your ID or license at a TSA Checkpoint, you must authenticate using the Face ID or Touch ID that is associated with it before your phone displays your information to an identity reader.” “Depending on the location where you show your ID or license, there may be additional requirements. “For example, when you show your license or identification to the TSA’s identity reader, they capture your image and compare it with the picture presented in Apple Wallet.”
Digital ID is not available in all countries. Apple Wallet ID requires iOS 16.5 and an iPhone 8 or above. In California, ID is only available on iPhone XS and later models with iOS 17.5. Puerto Rico also requires an iPhone XS model or later, but with iOS 18.1 or higher.
It is important that travelers confirm their devices are compatible with the digital ID before using it at an Airport.
New Airports Across the U.S. Real ID On May 7, new rules came into effect. According to the new rules, domestic flight passengers must use state-issued IDs and drivers’ licenses that are more recent in order to fly. Passports can be used by domestic travelers to board flights. Apple Digital ID may offer an alternative option for domestic travelers who want to be able to show multiple IDs when flying.
