There are two main types of lists that prohibit flying: the official No Fly List, created by the government, and airline-specific lists. You may not be aware that you are on a list until you attempt to book or board an airline flight.

You may be familiar with the idea of a “no-fly” list if you have ever seen the movie “Due Date.” In the 2010 movie, Robert Downey Jr.’s and Zach Galifiniakis characters are forced to drive across country after being kicked off a plane for accidentally using trigger words such as “bomb” or “terrorist.” The no-fly list is not a joke, even though the film is a comedy and it doesn’t reflect a real story. The American people have certain unalienable human right, but flying is not one. You could lose your middle seat if the federal or airline authorities deem it bad enough.

    Federal No Fly List

The FBI division that maintains and updates the U.S. government’s official No Fly List has created a list of private individuals who are not allowed to fly. Threat Screening Center (TSC). The No Fly List, which is actually a part of a much larger list called the terrorist watchlist, is a subset. An FBI spokesperson confirms that U.S. citizens account for approximately half of No Fly records. Travel + Leisure. Anyone on the “No Fly List” is prohibited from flying commercially to or from the U.S. They are also not allowed to fly commercially over the U.S. According to FBI, anyone can get on the No Fly List, no matter their citizenship. Since years, wealthy passengers who are on the No Fly List can avoid it by using their private jets, which are not subject to TSA screening, as one of the government agencies that has access to the No Fly List.

What makes you a no-flyer on the federal list?

The federal No Fly List can be accessed in a few different ways. You could also be put on the list if you threaten an act of domestic or international terrorism against an airline, a passenger or civil aviation security. You could also be on the list if you make a threat of an act terrorism against the U.S. The list includes threats against U.S. government installations abroad, including embassies. consulates, military bases, and consulates.

How can you tell if you are on the federal no fly list?

The federal No Fly List cannot be made public, as terrorist groups may use it for their own benefit. The only way to know you are on the federal No Fly List most of the time is if your airline does not issue you a boarding ticket after you have purchased your tickets. You may, in very limited circumstances, receive a notification from DHS if you are an American citizen or legal resident. The letter will not explain the reason for your inclusion on the list. The letter may include an appeal option if you feel you do not belong on the No Fly List. This letter will not be sent to you if you’re not a U.S. Citizen or a legal permanent resident.

    No Fly Lists for Airlines

The federal government has a No Fly List. However, airlines can also blacklist certain passengers to prevent them from flying on future flights. Delta maintains a separate internal no-fly-list from one managed by Homeland Security/TSA. Delta T+L. We don’t comment on or describe our internal list due to security and operational concerns. Many passengers on these airline no-fly lists—which airlines have different names for—are deemed “unruly passengers.” In 2024 the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Logged 2,102 unruly reports. Even though it seems like a lot of reports, keep in the mind that every day 2.9 millions passengers travel through U.S. airports.

A person’s inclusion on one airline’s no fly list does not necessarily mean they are also on another airline’s list. They don’t usually share this information. Executive Platinum American Airlines member Keith White He was on the no-fly American Airlines list when he arrived at the airport. By purchasing a ticket last-minute on another airline, he managed to reach his destination. When he arrived at his destination, American Airlines removed him from its no-flylist. They never explained why.

What puts you on a no-fly airline list?

Unruly behaviour is the main reason why passengers find themselves on a list of no-flying airlines. It includes threats and violent behavior that interferes with airline crew members’ ability to do their job, which impacts the safety for other passengers. Delta reported that in 2022 it had nearly 2,000 people on its no fly list. Most of them were on the list because they refused to wear a face mask at the height of COVID.

According to Christopher Elliot a consumer advocate, and founder of Elliot AdvocacyAirlines should let you know in advance if your name is on the list. Elliot believes that the consumer should be made aware of their ban and the steps they can take to lift it. However, airlines do not always comply with this. Keith White is one of those passengers who didn’t know until an agent at the gate tried to scan his boarding pass and it was denied. You may receive papers after being escorted from the plane if you did something that immediately got you banned. Some passengers have reported receiving emails from airlines informing of their status.

Do I have to stay off the plane if I am selected for an extra screening?

If you are chosen for an extra screening, this does not mean that your application is automatically rejected. find the dreaded “SSSS” on your boarding pass This does not mean that your name is on the airline’s “no-fly” list. DHS says that “such delays are often due to a name being similar to someone who is already on the watchlist.” If you are affected, you may appeal the decision and request a visa. redress number. DHS reports that “98% of people who request redress do not have any connection to terrorist watchlists.” You can use your redress number to book a flight. It is a seven-digit case code. The airline and TSA will be able to check your case, and confirm that you are not on any watch lists, despite having been flagged.
