    This Caribbean Island Got an Updated Travel Advisory for Petty Crime and Violence—What Travelers Should Know

    State Department has issued a new alert urging travelers to be extra cautious when visiting Cuba because of crime and power outages. U.S. citizens are only permitted to travel to Cuba under certain circumstances, but they should be prepared for power outages and other events.

    Cuba is not the Caribbean, where you can expect to find sun, sand, and fun. Travelers to Cuba should be cautious, says a new warning. 

    Recently, the Bureau of Consular Affairs of the United States Department of State issued a Level 2 travel advisory The island is a dangerous place to visit due to the crime and unstable electrical power. The advisory was published on 7 May and states that crime in Cuba is on the rise. This includes petty crimes, violent crimes, armed robbery and homicide. 

    The Level 2 alert is below Level 4, which says “do no travel.” 

    A frequent electric disruption is also mentioned by the agency, along with the risk of crime and homicide. 

    The advisory says that “since October 2024 there have been several extended nationwide power outages,” The advisory states that “power cuts of up to 12 hour duration are scheduled and unscheduled in Havana and can last even longer outside the capital.”

    Cuba is not allowed to be visited by Americans for leisure or tourism, but the Cuban government allows them to do so. approval process Travelers can visit for many reasons, including religious activities, sporting competitions or humanitarian ones. 

    According to the alert for travelers still planning to visit Cuba, they should remain aware of their environment and avoid displaying wealth like expensive watches or jewelery. They should also not physically resist a robbery attempt. The alert suggests stocking up on nonperishable items like food and water. Also, make sure to have flashlights, batteries, and mobile phones charged in the event of a blackout.

    Any American traveling abroad is encouraged to register at the agency. Smart Traveler Enrollment Program STEP. The free program provides contact information for regional embassies to notify American citizens in case of emergency or any other critical situation.
