    You’ve heard about the Outer Banks—maybe you’ve even visited them. It’s a separate region. North Carolina. The 85-mile stretch stretches from Cape Lookout up to the mouth New River. Within those boundaries are a number of gorgeous island strips and quaint waterfront communities—the most prominent of which are located on Bogue Banks, a barrier island that encompasses Atlantic Beach, Emerald IslePine Knoll Shores and Indian Beach, Salter Path. Beaufort is another popular destination along the Crystal Coast, as are Harkers Island and Morehead City. You can find relaxation and natural beauty in any part of the Crystal Coast region.

    “The Crystal Coast” is a quiet stretch small towns White-sand beaches with pristine waters. Hallock Cooper Howard says, “We have plenty of boating, fishing and scuba-diving.     In order to create our official guide for North Carolina’s Crystal Coast we asked locals to share their tips on how to plan a perfect trip.

    The Atlantis

    “The Atlantis … is a 1960s beachfront lodge that you would have grown up going to, but modernized to current standards,” says John and Beth Blackwelder, owner of The AerieA bed-and breakfast in New Bern. Come for the fully equipped kitchens and dog-friendly suites. Stay for the breathtaking views of the ocean from your porch.

    Oceanana Family Motel

    Cape Lookout National Seashore has 56 miles undeveloped beaches, marshes, and dunes. This protected chain is made up of three barrier islands, Shackleford Banks North Core Banks and South Core Banks. Blackwelder says that you can “experience Outer Banks before it has been developed.”

    “These barrier islands, referred to by locals as ‘Shack’ and ‘The Cape,’ are only accessible by boat,” says Howard. But you don’t have to own a boat. You don’t need a private boat, though. Island Express Ferry Service Passenger ferries run between Beaufort Island and Harkers Island. On the way, you might see dolphins or rays. “As you walk along shore, keep an eye out for hermit crabs and horseshoe crabs as well as a variety of shorebirds,” says the guide. Keep an eye out as well for the wild horses. In addition to being beautiful and enjoyable to explore, the barrier islands also have herds wild horses. Howard continues, “How they got there remains a mystery. But it’s fun seeing them strolling down the beach and having a good time.”

    Visit the nearby state parks or nature preserves.

    Holbrook says that if land is your preferred comfort zone, there are many historical sites and state parks with beaches, trails and historical reenactments.     Enjoy a traditional beach day.

    It’s tempting to plan your days around activities. But don’t forget about the “offbeat vibe” of the area, which Blackwelder calls. Some people may choose to go fishing or sail, while others prefer to lounge on the beach at Emerald Isle or Atlantic Beach.

    Indian Beach and Salter Path

    Farrington recommends that you drive “down to Indian Beach and get a super-shrimp burger at the Captain’s Kitchen mobile food truck” if this is your first visit to the Crystal Coast.     Beaufort has one of the most delicious restaurants in North Carolina. It’s called Blue Moon Bistro. Frey mentions that the chef Josh is very good at using local products. Howard describes the experience as “unparalleled” for a brunch or lunch. Beaufort Grocery Co. There is a great wine list, as well as delicious salads and sandwiches. Weekend brunches include bottomless mimosas as well as eggs Benedict, freshly-baked pastries, and fluffy, buttery pancakes.

    Morehead City

    Beaufort

    There are a number of shops along the Beaufort waterfront. Howard recommends popping into Island Proper You can also find out more about the following: Beaufort Linen Co. The Beaufort General Store is also a good pick for fudge, ice cream, and souvenir T-shirts—plus a healthy dose of summertime nostalgia.

    Locals say that while summer may be the time of year when most tourists visit the Crystal Coast region, spring and autumn are the ideal times to travel to this part. Howard’s favorite time is early autumn. After the summer rush, beaches and waterways are less crowded. The water remains warm, the sun sets spectacularly, and you feel like it’s all yours.

    The spring is equally magical. The seagrass changes from brown to green as everything starts to spring back to life.

    Coastal Carolina Regional Airport (EWN) in New Bern is the closest airport to the towns and beaches that make up the Crystal Coast—about 45 minutes away—but flights are limited. Other options for flying into the area include the Albert J. Ellis Airport in Jacksonville, North Carolina, (just over an hour’s drive) and Wilmington International Airport in Wilmington, (just two hours away). Raleigh-Durham International Airport is the biggest airport in the region, but it is about three hours away from your final destination. Rent a car from any airport to travel to the Crystal Coast.

    How to Get Around

    Most of the travel along Crystal Coast is by car. If you plan to visit a few towns, take U.S. 70, which runs through Morehead City to Atlantic Beach. You can rent a bike (or golf cart) for transportation around the area.
