Wyndham unveiled a new tool Tuesday that will allow members of their loyalty program to redeem their points in order to attend major sporting events, live concerts and other travel-related experiences.
The new effort has been named Wyndham Rewards Experiences Over 100 activities were available to launch, including Madison Square Garden, Radio City Music Hall Minor League Baseball, Caesars Rewards and more.
This year’s A Skift megatrend Was about the growing “live tourism.”
Wyndham owners will also be able to work directly with the franchiser to create packages and offers that are specific to their property, based on local events.
Many of the experiences are offered as dynamic auctions, where members bid for the chance to get tickets to events, such as a sold-out Vans Warped Tour in Long Beach, California, and a Country Jam in Grand Junction, Colorado. Some redemptions are based on fixed points starting at 2,500. For example, a typical Wyndham hotel stay can earn around 1,000 points.
Michael Shiwdin leads the loyalty and partnerships team at Wyndham. Experience providers who want to offer travel experiences as redemptions can contact this group.
Wyndham Rewards is powered by the backend of Points.com Affiliates
The company’s latest effort on Tuesday marks the first time it has entered the live tourism market. Wyndham has more than 9,300 hotels and began selling vacation packages that included tours and activities on its website about five months ago (with inventory provided by partners such as online travel agency Viator).
Wyndham reported that it has more than 115 million loyalty members and that last year, one out of two check-ins in a Wyndham was made by a Wyndham member.
Wyndham has announced that, later this year it will change the way in which it reimburses hoteliers for guests who redeem free nights.
A spokesperson stated that “a hotel with high quality but average occupancy will receive a larger reimbursement than one that has both.”
