New York City’s favorite restaurant is one that you don’t even have. A crowded subway car passes for your psychologist’s office—it’s where you can cry in peace. Some hotel lobbies are perfect for home offices. However, not all of them are suitable to do tasks like tackling your inbox, or having a meeting which was originally meant to be a dinner date, but has now changed to a coffee date.

I have been working remotely for a few years now, so I keep a running list with lobbies that offer nooks to feel private, comfortable couches, good Wi-Fi and ambient noise levels that don’t make it difficult to think. It’s an incredibly rare combination of features, especially since some hotels make their lobby a popular place for date nights or drinks after work. Other hotels clearly do not want guests to linger in their lobby. You know what I mean if you have ever seen a lobby that was sparsely furnished with just two wooden-backed chairs and one tiny marble coffeetable.

Most staff at the spots on this list are perfectly happy and aware that not everyone who hangs out in the lobby is a hotel guest, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t some unspoken rules: First, order something—whether that’s an espresso or two, a snack, or a cocktail—every hour or so you’re in the space, and tip like you would at a restaurant. Do not take any calls longer than 5 minutes, including Zoom calls. Accept your fate and play outlet roulette. Also, refrain from disturbing other guests with the charging cord. It’s your fault that you didn’t prepare ahead. This list includes five NYC hotel lobbies that are perfect for working.

The lobby of Brooklyn’s Ace Hotel has a sleek design with plenty of cushioned seats that make it easy to stay for a while.

It’s easy to see why this sleek, midcentury modern-inspired lobby in the heart of downtown Brooklyn location gets so busy—it’s as comfortable as it is fashionable. Bring headphones if needed to focus. Grab a place at the communal table, which is equipped with outlets and reading lights. Wi-Fi works well and reliably, and there’s a cold brew that’s above average. The sunroom, adjacent to the hotel lobby, is the perfect spot to take calls and not disturb your neighbors. It is also a more social environment than the other places listed on this list.
