Having lived in Africa all my life and traveled there extensively, I have been fortunate enough to see its vast wilderness at every phase. Africa’s “green season”, or off-peak, offers unforgettable experiences.

During the time of transformations, wildlife sightings are more frequent but feel more intimate. Each corner is a unique experience, whether it’s a baby lion taking its first steps to colorful birds fluttering in the air. Traveling to Africa in this off-peak period might be your best decision. Here’s why:

    What to See

The green period varies from region to region, but is generally between November and the end of May. Rainclouds transform the golden savannahs, dotted with vibrant birds and fresh flowers, into lush greenery.

Africa’s wildlife is a big draw. Southern Serengeti, home to many species’ calving period, is a major attraction from January to March. One of the most famous being the Great Migration. It’s a great privilege to watch thousands of calves experience the world for their first time. The lack of crowds makes it even more special.

The Southern African green season is a time for wildlife to be seen in all its glory. BotswanaTens of thousands zebras search for fresh grass in the Makgadikgadi Pans. Zambia’s Kasanka National Park bat migration—the world’s largest mammal migration—sees millions of fruit bats darken the sky.

Kenya’s Lake Nakuru becomes pink as thousands of flamingos flock to it.

What to Do in the Area

Off-peak travel allows you to find the best accommodations, whether it’s a mobile camp or luxury lodge. Fewer visitors mean better room selection—like a suite with views of Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania Or a tent facing the river in Botswana’s Okavango Delta. Low demand can also lead to discounts. Asilia’s Naboisho Camp In Kenya, the price per person per night drops from $1950 USD during peak season to only $660 USD during green season.

A bonus? Staff at the camp will give you their undivided focus. The staff has more time during this period to spend with guests, be attentive, and to interact.

    What to Do

Asilia Africa takes you on a Jeep Safari.

In this season, most safari activities are still available. Fewer visitors also means that there is more space for 4×4 vehicles. Game viewing can be customized to suit your interests with more time spent with your guide.

This season is also ideal for water-based sports in many other regions. Boat safaris are made possible by the rising water levels. mokoro (traditional canoe) trips.

Photographers can capture Africa’s green season without having to rush.

Why now is the time to go

The secret’s out: the green season offers an unforgettable adventure with less-crowded game drives, exclusive lodges, and unique seasonal wildlife spectacles—all set against a vibrant, rejuvenated landscape. Each season in Africa offers something unique, but those who embrace green season will discover a side to Africa that most people miss.
