We can all agree: New York City Isn’t it the best city on Earth? Living in New York is magical. There are more museums to visit than you can in a lifetime. You will also find countless restaurants and some of the world’s most iconic architecture. But even the most devoted New Yorkers need a break now and then—and that’s where a quick weekend escape comes in. What’s the best place to escape? The travel experts we spoke with said that the best place to go for a relaxed getaway is Hudson, New York.

Victor Rivera, general manager of Hudson Valley, said: “One of my favourite getaways from New York City would be Hudson, New York.” LUMA Hotel Times SquareShared with Travel + Leisure. “It’s only about a two‐hour train ride from Penn Station on Amtrak, and the views of the Hudson River along the way already help you transition into a completely different pace of life.”

Rivera described the town as “relaxed and stylish” with a perfect mix of historical charm, creative energy and nature.

“What I love most about Hudson is the balance it strikes between laid‐back small‐town simplicity and a surprisingly sophisticated cultural and culinary scene,” Rivera said. “There’s one main street—Warren Street—but it’s filled with independent shops, galleries, antiques, and locally owned cafés. It is also something of a foodie destination, with great restaurants, bakeries and specialty markets that are sourced directly from local farms. At the same time, you’re never more than 10–15 minutes from a forest trail, river access, or a historic estate.”

Catie Dridscoll, guest service supervisor of the Heartwood at Vassar The Walkway over Hudson is a MUST in the Hudson Valley.

It’s a linear, 212-foot park that connects Lloyd with Poughkeepsie. It’s not only a wonderful walking trail but there are many events that take place in and around the park, including movies showing under the walkway or Pride in the Sky.

Rivera has also stated that Olana State Historic SiteThe Hudson Athens Lighthouse is also a wonderful way to spend an evening. Boat trips are available seasonally that will take you there.

Kristen Tomkowid is a local photographer, owner of Little But Fierce PhotographyThe nearby Catskills are a great place to spend an afternoon. Tomkowid stated that there is plenty to do at all times, including hiking, visiting beautiful waterfalls like Kaaterskill and Awosting and snow activities in the mountains. You can also rent cozy cabins from one of the boutique hotels which have recently opened. Weekends and leaf-peeping seasons can be very busy, but the mornings and weeks are usually quiet and peaceful.

Rivera also recommends the following places for overnight stays in the region: The Maker HotelShe says that even if you do not stay, the cocktail menu and design are worth visiting.

Gianna Quattrini is a travel adviser for ForaThe Wylder Hotel is a good choice for those who live in the Hudson Valley. “I got wed in Windham in New York on October 20, 2023 and chose the Wylder Hotel, We will be using an SLH as the wedding hotel to accommodate our family and friends. With pickleball courts, wood-burning saunas, ping pong, a cozy coffee shop, and a lively bar & pool set along a peaceful creek, the atmosphere gives low-key yet elevated adult summer camp vibes. “It’s a fantastic option for company retreats.”

Our experts say that Hudson is perfect for artists, creatives and New Yorkers who want to slow down. It’s also great for travelers who enjoy local experiences. Rivera says, “you can spend the day hiking, then the afternoon shopping in antique stores, and the evening eating a delicious meal, without ever getting back into the car.”
