    Azura

    • Azura is situated on the edge of a steep cliff and offers spectacular views of the Atlantic Ocean at every turn.
    • The resort features a private saltwater infinity swimming pool and beach.
    • There are many different accommodations available, ranging between standard hotel rooms and spacious apartment style suites with kitchens.
    • The terrace poolbar makes a great version of Bermuda’s unofficial national drink, the rum swizzle. This cocktail is made from pineapple, orange juice, cranberry and Angostura bitters with two types of rums (including Bermuda’s Goslings of course).

I was surprised that my first trip to Bermuda I was forced to rethink my perception of blue. There were simply so many shades of it when I visited in March—enough to make me feel like the English lexicon was not sufficient to describe all of them.

When I was boating around the tiny rocky ilets in Mangrove Bay on the western tip, I noticed a vivid greenish-blue color. Another was in Crystal Cave. It is an underground complex with millions-old limestone formations beneath a still, clear lake. The light from the boardwalk illuminated the electric turquoise color. And at Azura BermudaThe clifftop resort where I stayed on my long weekend trip had even more colors: cobalts, teals, cornflowers, ceruleans, ice and everything between.

Azura may be familiar to Bermuda visitors as the former Surf Side Beach Club which closed in 2015. The property has undergone many changes in the last decade, but the view of the Atlantic is still the same. The vast, all-encompassing ocean is so overwhelming that you can’t walk for very long without stopping in your tracks. I watched the waves while having breakfast on a sunny pool deck, and also during a rooftop yoga class. The glass wall of my room in the resort’s west end was facing the waves. It was located in a building that was awash with white and clean lines. Most of the time, I was only able to see sky and bright turquoise water with Bermuda’s distinctive bar reefs.

Azura’s first phase was quietly launched in 2020. The pandemic had delayed the grand opening. In the years that followed, the resort expanded in phases. A collection of modern bungalows and three new building were unveiled. The atmosphere is residential and relaxed. Azura is a condominium resort with individual ownership. This was designed to create a sustainable and stable model for a location that has high operating costs. Residents must leave a suite or a room—which can be seamlessly separated from the rest of the residence, becoming indistinguishable from a standard hotel room—available for booking on a regular basis.

Azura is located in Warwick Parish along the central part of Bermuda’s South Shore. Its bright, modern style and tranquil atmosphere are its biggest assets. Hamilton, the capital of Bermuda, and many of its attractions are just 15 minutes away. Bermuda’s best spots Elbow Beach offers a variety of swimming and tanning options. Jobson’s CoveHorseshoe Bay is also a must-see. Azura’s private beach was the place I chose to stay. It has a tranquil saltwater swimming pool nestled at the base of the cliff. I spent hours there every day looking out over the sea, which blended from sapphire to aquamarine, and the wide, blue skies, which were powdery and silvery around their edges. I tried to find new words to describe the shades I had never seen before, but I eventually decided that certain things are just too difficult to put into words.

    The Rooms

Azura has 60 rooms, suites and villas spread over a number of renovated clifftop structures. They are grouped around the main swimming pool and reflect the classic Bermudian architecture, including the iconic stepped roofing (which collects rainwater). Three of the newer buildings are more modern. No matter where you choose to stay, the interiors will be bright, fresh, and sunny. These are clad with a palette that includes white, blond, and blue woods. In 2026, the final construction phase will be complete, adding 20 more rooms.

Oceanfront guest rooms offer a view of the ocean that is unobstructed. Other rooms provide ocean views but are not as direct. Suites with one, two, or three bedrooms are available. They include washers and tumble dryers as well as fully-equipped kitchens. Oceanfront Jacuzzi Suites is the highest category. It has a large terrace, complete with a hot-tub, and up to 2,500 square foot.

    Accessibility, Sustainability and Sustainability

The resort currently does not offer guest rooms that are designed to accommodate guests who use wheelchairs or other assistive devices. However, four of these rooms will be built during the final phase of construction. This is scheduled for completion in the year 2026. To discuss your needs, contact the resort directly. The main pool, the lobby and the outdoor dining area are all accessible.

Buildings are a great way to get a new home. Bermuda must be designed to catch and store rainwater, and Azura is no different—in fact, water harvesting provides all the water for the hotel, including both guest rooms and public spaces.
