The Farm
- This brand new Bahamas hotel is located on a farm that’s fully operational.
- The Farm runs entirely on solar power, and most of the food that you eat there comes directly from the farm you are staying on.
- It is only a 10-minute drive to the airport. The beach is just a 5-minute walk away.
- The rustic elegance of the Bahamas is based on a South African winery.
“It’s just down the street in five minutes,” said she. “No turns. You can’t miss it.”
The front desk concierge of The Other Side Hotel, Bahamas, was thanked by my girlfriend and myself. Eleuthera island—the beachside boutique our ferry dropped us off at—and headed inland. The dirt track went up and down, but there was no sign of any accommodations that we had reserved for the following few days. Was it really real? The Farm was a new resort on Eleuthera Island. We had seen photos and videos of it before our trip. The following are some of the ways to improve your own ability to speak. It may seem that something is too good to true.
Then, on another hill, it appeared almost from nowhere: A large property with palm trees swaying in the wind, 200 garden beds filled with sweet-smelling flowers, and cottages with thatched roofs along its outer edge.
Ben Simmons is the founder of The Farm.

Simmons also runs Harbour Island Ocean View Eleuthera’s The Other SideThe Farm’s farm was built in 2018. The farm provided vegetables, fruits, and eggs to his two hotels as well as his wedding business. There are 70 clucking hens on the property. But Simmons—who acquired the land in a squabble that dates back to a dramatic 18th-century sea battle involving his Eleutheran ancestors defeating the much more powerful Spaniards—had bigger plans for his agricultural oasis. He wanted to expand his business and increase the number Bahamian owned properties in the Caribbean. Most importantly, however, he wished to inspire travelers and locals to live off the rich, fertile Caribbean land.
Five years later he wondered, “Why not build another hotel?” On, The farm?
The farm opened in November 2024, as part of Simmons’ Little Island Hotel chain. His team wants to make it a place that visitors can come to not only to stay but to also learn about gardening. He plans to host speakers and seminars in the off-season. He also intends to expand his gardens, increase the variety of crops, as well as the number of chickens.
The Farm’s Sunday Brunch is a favorite of celebrities like Michael Jordan, Derek Jeter and others. Eli Manning and his family spent a couple of weeks on the property. Kendall Jenner’s assistant even got married in the avocado and mango trees last winter.
Even with all the fanfare and noise, you feel like no one else is here. All I could hear were the bees buzzing in the flowers, someone quietly slipping into the pool and the welcome breeze blowing from the Atlantic.

The Rooms
Around the vegetable and flower gardens are 12 cottages. The eight larger accommodations are 1,024 square feet ($550 to $600 per night)—with king-size beds, wide verandas, and an open-plan layout—while four are smaller at 540 square feet ($350 to $400 per night) and can have a king-size bed or two twins. The larger cottage was at the end of the property, next to the freshwater pool. The wooden dutch door immediately made us feel at home. Simmons cites South Africa as his inspiration. Babylonstoren Note the gently curving roofs of the cottages.
Inside, you’ll find a luxurious king-size mattress, two comfortable couches and a standalone bath. Each accommodation includes strong Wi-Fi and AC, as well as a Nespresso, a shower with a waterfall, and a kettle.
When describing the building, he said that it sent a subtle message about how farming can be a hard life. It is rugged and almost austere. But it’s luxurious in the way that it offers health, food, community and connection to nature.
Food and Drink
Many of the foodstuffs you find around you are also edible.
The Farm offers a kitchen where breakfasts are served for free. This includes fruit, yogurt, veggies and fruits. You can order from the menu, which is mostly egg dishes. Each morning, the eggs are taken from the henhouse. I liked the egg sandwich and a side of salad because I saw the waiter fill up a bowl with greens in the garden after I had ordered the salad.
The Farm is reservation-only for lunch and dinner—priority booking is given to guests staying at the resort. The meals consist of vegetables picked from the farm and fish caught on that particular day. The menu does not include any meat.
The Other Side is also a 5-minute walk from the hotel. We ate there one evening for delicious mac-and cheese and ribs. You can also arrange to have a golf cart or ferry taken by the concierge Allie Saunders for a trip to Harbour Island. Harbour Island is just 10 minutes away. One evening on Harbour Island we dined at the Coral Sands Pink Mermaid, a seafood restaurant with a view of the ocean.
And, of course, there is Sunday Brunch at The Farm: A communal, family-style soirée in the garden under the centrally located Yellow Elder trees. This is a fun event that includes fresh food, drinks expertly mixed, and laughter with old and new friends.
Activities and Experiences
Jody Zorn Photographie/Little Island Hotels
The Farm is crowned by its magnificent pool. The 576 square foot gem is ideal for wading in the pool, morning laps or simply relaxing with a book. Lazing around, is what you mostly do at The Farm.
There are also outdoor ping-pong and billiard tables—plus a rustic-chic gym—for active guests. If you get tired of relaxing under the avocado trees of The Farm, you can stroll over to The Other Side’s private beach. The Other Side offers sunset paddleboards. The resort offers snorkeling at the coral reef nearby for free. Turtles, rainbowfish and octopuses can be found in the shallow, clear waters.
The Spa
There is no spa at The Farm—yet. The team plans to add a spa in 2026, a deluxe hut featuring a cold plunge pool. For now guests can choose to book massages for their rooms or by the pool.
Offers for Families
The Farm and Simmons certainly encourage families to come visit. The Sunday Brunch attracts large families, as there is plenty of room to roam and swim. There are also ping pong and billiard tables for those who want to play. Cottages are available for bookings, whether it’s for a family reunion or vacation. And Simmons wants the younger generation to learn why it’s important to grow your own food—both for your health and the environment. Richard, the friendly groundskeeper who is always on hand to help the kids, can feed the chickens and pick tomatoes.
Accessibility, Sustainability and Sustainability
The Farm was founded on the principle of sustainability. Solar panels provide 100 percent of the property’s power, absorbing energy both from the sun and the earth below. The kitchen uses plastic sparingly, there are 10 compost stations—with 15 more on the way—and all vegetables are grown organically with no weed killers or toxins.
Simmons stated, “We think that to be sustainable we must also be efficient.” The panels not only power our facility but also shade our chickens, who process food scraps to feed our plant beds. The panels protect our hydroponics and propagation stations.”
The Bahamas’ fertile, rich soil is the main reason why the Farm team wants to live off it. And they plan on expanding their plot—adding citrus trees and maybe a farm stand next season. The Farm is hoping to inspire other hotels to follow their lead.
Location
The Farm can be reached in 13 minutes by car from North Eleuthera Airport. Harbour Island is also just a short ferry trip away. The concierge at the Farm can assist with either of these transfers. They’ll also assist you in renting your own car to explore the island—including nearby Gregory Town or local haunts like Daddy Joe’s or Tippy’s beach bar.
