There are more than 2,400 species Fireflies are common in the United States. Most people have seen or heard of fireflies. synchronized firefly displaysThere’s an unusual phenomenon that is only visible in certain parts of the southern Appalachian Mountains. Many people have never heard of it or seen it.

Pisgah national forest, near Brevard, North Carolina, is one of the few places blue ghost fireflies—a rare species that gives off a continuous blue glow—call home.

Clinton Wickers, the site manager of the Cradle of Forestry Find Outdoors, a nonprofit organization, operates in Pisgah Forest National Forest. It looks like an eerie blue ghost, or a small blue light, floating through the forest, almost leaving trails.

The firefly light is used to attract mates during the mating period, which usually occurs in late spring or early summer. Both males and women use flashing patterns or sequences of flashes in order to find a mate. Phausis reticulata species don’t fly. As a result, males hover low, illuminating for up to a minute, while females signaling on the ground create what appears to be a floating blue floor.

The effect was described by Dr. Jennifer Frick Ruppert, Vice President of Academic Affairs and Dean of Faculty at Brevard College as “looking like elves carrying the lights throughout the forest”. previously. It’s difficult to believe this is true. Frick Ruppert was unable to identify blue ghost fireflies that she found on her property. She then began researching. publishing her findings The little-known insect gained modest fame in 2008.

The blue ghost fireflies are so difficult to photograph that it makes them even more mysterious. Wickers warns that you won’t be able capture any fireflies on camera. You will need specialized equipment to even attempt to snap a photo.

Photographically, the ghost blue fireflies appear green. Wickers says that the intensity of light from these fireflies makes it appear blue in the human eye.

You’ll only have a short window of opportunity to see the blue ghost fireflies each year. Take a tour with a guide to ensure you don’t destroy or disturb their habitat. This year, Find will host tours Through the Cradle of Forestry will be available on selected dates between May 19, 2018 and June 7, 2018. Wickers sells out of tickets if they are not purchased in advance.

Arrive at the Forest Festival Trail by 845pm for a brief educational program. The trail is a paved 1.3 mile route. A red-light flashlight is recommended as the traditional ones or the light from your phone will interfere with fireflies.

    Be patient.

Wickers suggests that people turn off their lights, stop and take a look at the woods on their left or their right for a couple of minutes and then stand still. “And see what happens.”
