Selfies are a convenient way to remember a vacation, but certain places can be more dangerous than others.

Our research reveals a disturbing trend in which the pursuit of social validation can literally cost lives. The perfect shot isn’t even worth the risk, Kris Barber, founder and principal lawyer at The Barber Law Firm told the paper. The fact that the majority of these accidents could have been prevented simply by moving back a few feet or changing vantage points is particularly alarming.

The United States was the second-most dangerous country to take a selfie, with 45 incidents reported, including 37 fatalities and eight injuries. The third place on the list was taken by Russia with 19 selfie-related incidents. 18 of them resulted in deaths.

The law firm compiled its list of dangerous countries for taking a selfie by looking at incidents involving selfies that resulted in injury or death from March 2014 to May 2025. According to the newspaper, falling was the leading cause of fatal selfie accidents. This accounted for 46% of all incidents.

The danger of selfies is also not a recent phenomenon. A 2023 Journal of Medical Internet Research study The study found that selfie-related incidents are a serious public health issue. According to the study, falls from cliffs were the leading cause of selfie-related death in Australia and the United States, especially in aquatic areas. Young women and girls were also disproportionately affected.

For safety, avoid taking selfies too close to cliffs or other high precipices. You should also be aware of any risks that may affect those around you.

Barber told the audience that “there are always safer options to capture beautiful moments, without putting your life at risk.” Post. “No likes or shares are worth putting your own life at risk.”
