But although there’s much to see and do during the day, one of the most essential elements of any Tokyo getaway is having a cozy place to sleep at night—and it doesn’t hurt if that place just happens to be very luxurious and well-appointed.

      Every year for our World’s Best Awards survey, T+L asks readers to weigh in on travel experiences around the globe—to share their opinions on the top hotels, resorts, cities, islands, cruise ships, spas, airlines, and more. The survey for 2025 was completed by almost 180,000 readers of T+L. Over 657,000 votes were cast for over 8,700 different properties (hotels cities cruise lines etc.).).

      Based on their location, hotels were categorized as resort hotel, city, inn or safari lodge. They were also rated according to the following criteria:

      • Rooms/facilities
      • Location
      • Service
      • Food
      • Value

      The respondents were asked to rate each characteristic. They could select excellent, superior, above average (average), below average (below average) or poor. The final scores are the average of all these responses.

    What Readers Loved

    In this year’s rankings, readers seemed to prefer older properties. The Hilton Tokyo (No. 5) opened in the 1960s, while the runner-up, Park Hyatt Tokyo, which famously served as the main setting for the 2003 Sofia Coppola film “Lost in Translation,” debuted in the ‘90s. Park Hyatt Tokyo (No. The hotel is undergoing a 17-month long renovation to coincide with its 30th anniversary. The renovation will include all areas of the property including the guest accommodation. Additionally, the New York Grill & Bar (where Bill Murray meets Scarlett Johansson in the movie) will be restored to its original design. If everything goes according to plan, the hotel will reopen its doors in October 2025. 

    There was only one hotel that had opened recently on this list: the Four Seasons Otemachi, No. The third hotel opened in 2020. A reader described the hotel as “the perfect place”, while another called it an “amazing welcoming place” that had “gorgeous rooms” with “impeccable customer service”.

    The winner of this year’s contest is located in the middle of Tokyo, just a few steps away from the Imperial Palace.

    One reader said, “I’ve been to the Palace Hotel several time and have always been amazed at its genuine Japanese service.” The Imperial Palace is visible from the hotel’s location, which is excellent. “But I think that the staff always made such a difference.” 

    Readers praised the hotel for its “superlative” service, and referred to it as a place of “extreme hospitality.” This property’s food and beverage options are another major draw. It has 11 restaurants and bars, including Michelin-starred Esterre and Tatsumi, which offers six-seater tempura bar. Amber Palace is a Michelin-starred restaurant that serves Shanghainese, Cantonese, and other Asian cuisines.This classic property is the best in Tokyo, according to a reader.
