Guwahati International Airport – also known by the name Lokpriya Gopinath Boardoloi International Airport – was recently announced as being one of seven winners at the International Architecture Awards 2025 The Airports and Transportation Centers section will soon be launching a new terminal. The airport is primarily used by the northeastern corner in India, Assam.
The firm designed this beautiful terminal. Nudes ArchitectureThe project was part of a larger effort to improve the local infrastructure, and to accommodate more air travelers. The structure is inspired by Assam’s natural environment, culture, and biodiversity—and particularly by orchids and bamboo. Assam has more than 400 wild species of orchidsThe design brief for the airport was primarily inspired by “bamboo orchis”.
You can clearly see the leafy influence in the design—sweeping arches over open breezeways for passengers are made mostly from bamboo and other sustainable materials. Guwahati is the gateway to the Northeast in India. There will be skylights throughout the building to allow natural light to enter, as well as huge indoor gardens. The “arrival forest”, which will greet passengers at the airport and lead them to the baggage claim, will include skylights to let in natural light.
“The airport design is more than just a transportation hub—it is a living, breathing reflection of the region’s natural and cultural identity,” the International Architecture Awards’ website states. “It celebrates bamboo’s resilience, orchids’ grace, and their seamless integration into an sustainable, iconic airport design.”
The terminal is still being built and is not expected to be open until October or November of 2025. It will then be able to accommodate approximately 10 million passengers per year.
