Visitors to Greece Don’t miss AthensThe mainland of the country has much more to offer than its capital. I have been a travel adviser in Greece for the past 20 years and have seen travelers go from checking off tourist attractions to seeking out more rich, textured experiences. For those ready to go deeper, the Peloponnese and Northern Greece are two dynamic mainland destinations that offer luxury, history, and authenticity—without the crowds.

    Northern Greece

What to Do in the Area

Thessaloniki’s the cultural capital for the north. Stay at the Electra Palace HotelThe landmark property, located on Aristotelous Square and offering views of Thermaic Gulf. The hotel is a great base to explore the city’s neoclassical architecture, vibrant markets, Byzantine Churches, and waterfront promenade.

    What to do

Thessaloniki’s mornings are best started with a bougatsa – a custard filled pastry. After walking through centuries of history, you can enjoy the unique food that combines Greek and Balkan influences. Explore the Macedonian Wine Country and climb Mount Olympus outside the city. The Royal Tombs of Aigai – just an hour from Thessaloniki – are one of the most significant archeological discoveries in Greece. The UNESCO World Heritage site contains the tomb of Philip II – the father of Alexander the Great – and a museum that is built right into the ancient burial mounds.

What to Do in the Area

Costa NavarinoOne of Greece’s most luxurious resorts is located along the Ionian Coast. Four luxury properties—The Westin, W, The Romanos. Mandarin Oriental—provide choices for everyone, from families to honeymooners. This is a great destination for anyone interested in golf, gastronomy or wellness. It’s also a great starting point to explore the wider Peloponnesian area.

    What to do

Visit Arcadia in the interior, where villages like Dimitsana, Stemnitsa and Dimitsana are surrounded by forested trails and offer a timeless view of stone houses. Visit Olympia, the site of the first Olympic Games. The museum on-site and the atmospheric ruins provide an important context to today’s ceremony. Stroll the scenic port in Pylos, tour the castle of Niokastro, or visit the Gialova Lagoon—home to migratory birds and serene views. If you want to experience a truly immersive and luxurious experience, then the Peloponnese will not disappoint.
