Many travelers are familiar with liquid restrictions at TSAThere are some exceptions, however, that allow you to take certain items in larger quantities. The containers of prescription medications, baby formula and other medical liquids can be larger than 3.4 ounces. However, they are still the main reason bags are pulled aside.

TSA spokesperson: “Even though medically essential liquids are allowed, officers may still need to screen them if they exceed 3.4 ounces.” “This could be the most frequent example [of items that are technically allowed but still flagged].”

It may seem harmless for you to use protein powder as fuel to power your workouts, or to pack away spices that you bought on a trip overseas. But they could raise questions when scanned by an X ray machine. It is best to inform officers in advance.

“Transportation Security officers appreciate when passengers alert to unusual items like powders, formulas and spice, so they may be best placed to assist in screening before the item or alarm is found, and for a bag-search,” says the spokesperson.

Items that are unusually dense or large

The appearance of a large stack of books, board games, or clusters of electronic devices can be a solid mass that requires a closer inspection. TSA states that the “unpredictable” screening measures are part of their process. This means that even seemingly ordinary items can be flagged. The only thing you can do is remove any electronics larger than your cellphone from the standard lanes.

A spokesperson said: “In standard screening lanes all electronics must removed from carry-on bags for security screening.” TSA PreCheck passengers are allowed to keep their electronic devices in their bags.

    Snow Globes and Peanut Butter

It could be a souvenir snow globe. Or even jars or peanut butter. The spokesperson explains that some snow globes are prohibited because they contain liquids larger than 3.4 ounces. This rule covers anything that can spread, spill, spray, pour, or pump, so peanut butter can also fall under this category. Although peanut butter looks solid, the truth is that it is liquid. actually considered a liquid—especially by the TSA.

Travelers can be surprised by seemingly innocent items that are not allowed in carry-on luggage.

“Pepper Spray, Bear Spray, and Other Items that are Used for Personal Protection or as Weapons are prohibited items on commercial aircraftThe spokesperson confirms. Golf clubs, hiking poles and bats are also prohibited. TSA officers offer you three options if you pack an item accidentally: you can check it, return it to the car or surrender it.
