When planning a vacation, safety is always a factor that you should consider. solo travelWhat is the safest country in the world? What are the safest places in the world? It can be difficult to tell which countries are safest for visitors due to outdated information and outdated reputations.

The Institute of Economics and Peace has published its Safety Index to help quantify the topic. 2025 Global Peace Index (GPI)An annual data-driven measure of world peacefulness. IEP ranks the 163 nations, territories, and countries based on the following three domains for peacefulness: level of safety and security in society, extent of domestic and international conflict and degree of militarization. In each of those domains, they look at 23 qualitative and quantitative indicatorsThe data includes incarceration rate, homicide rate, death from internal conflict and perceptions of crime. The scores are then averaged for an overall composite—the lower the score, the safer the place.

The report for 2025 indicates that the average peace level in the world has declined by 0.36 percent since last year. In fact, the levels of many factors that prelude major conflicts are higher than they have been since World War II. This has resulted in the dissolution of many traditional alliances, and a rise in military use.

In spite of this, global indicators such as the impact of terrorism and homicide rate have improved in the last 12 months. This year’s list is similar to those of previous years, proving at least that some countries have it down. Spoiler alert: the country at the top of the list has been the same for 18 years.

You’ll see below the top 10 safest nations in the world. Each country is ranked according to its score (1=most peaceful and 5=least peaceable). And before you ask, the United States wasn’t even close to breaking into the top ten—it sits in position No. 128.

This article was updated to include new information since the original publication date.
