    These Are the Busiest Hiking Trails in the U.S.—Plus a New Tool to Help You Avoid the Crowds

    • AllTrails has added new features that will help hikers to find less-traveled routes.
    • Its Community Heatmaps service shows which trails are most popular with hikers and is available as a paid subscription.
    • The company ranked the five most popular hiking trails in the U.S. for 2024, with the most crowded route located in Montana.

    The National Park or a local hiking trail is a great place to find peace, tranquility and meet thousands of other people looking for similar things. Over 331.9 million people will visit a National Park by 2024. This means that outdoor enthusiasts are more active than ever. 

    For example, the reviews on the outdoor platform AllTrails reveal that the top five trails in 2024 are characterized by overcrowding. 

    Avalanche Lake in Montana received a recent one-star rating from a visitor who said, “It is a beautiful trail, but the crowds there are out of hand.” 

    To help hikers avoid overcrowding on trails and find a getaway, the National Park Service has created a website. AllTrails Recently launched a variety new features The perfect time to prepare for the busy summer season.  

    Community Heatmaps is one of the most useful features. It uses historical data to determine how much traffic has been on a particular trail. This allows hikers to easily find the right trail for them. Some people prefer a busy trail to ensure their safety and for navigational assistance, while others choose a less-traveled trail to enjoy a peaceful escape. 

    The feature may help hikers avoid five of the most popular hiking routes in 2024. These are:

    1. Avalanche Lake, Montana
    2. Delicate Arch Trail, Utah
    3. Devil’s Bridge via Mescal Trailhead, Arizona
    4. Skyline Loop in Washington
    5. Navajo Loop Trail, Utah

    The new heatmap can be accessed by paid members at the ‘Peak level’, a newly launched service with an annual subscription cost of $79.99. The new level also allows users to create their own routes, see live trail conditions, such as rain or snow, and use an artificially intelligent camera to track anything from mountain views to wild plants. 

    The free version of AllTrails (Base) is also getting major upgrades, including the addition of new Points Of Interest that can highlight must-see locations along a hiker’s journey. 

    “Points-of-interest help you discover must see sights on any trail.” We used insights from millions of photographs taken by our members to add over 500,000 popular attractions like waterfalls, mountain peaks, lakes and much more to our platform,” AllTrails Chief Product Officer Ivan Selin shared in a statement to Travel + Leisure. 

    Hikers on Devil’s Bridge trail in Arizona shared their experiences of having to wait over 30 minute for a certain overlook. It may be easier for Instagram users or outdoor photographers to find the right spot with the new features.
