There are also 5,000 plants that sprout throughout the space. The timber slats on the roof diffuse light similar to a forest canopy. 60 percent of the terminal is lit by natural light.

    In the concessions hall, local purveyors like Blue Star Donuts + Coffee, Mo’s Seafood & Chowder, and Powell’s Books contribute to the strong sense of place. A microcinema features short films from local filmmakers. The new terminal will double the airport’s capacity to accommodate 35 million passengers per year by 2045.

    A number of design features, including fritted glass to reduce glare, photovoltaic solar panels on the roof and a baggage handling system that is low in carbon, have all combined to produce major results. Gensler and Kuth ranieri’s architectural teams installed two plumbing systems that separate non-potable and potable water for use in flushing fixtures or landscaping.

    But passengers won’t be forced to give up any comfort. The terminal is filled with skylights that allow for plenty of light and creative design elements to enhance the space.
