Charleston’s Upper King Street draws locals and visitors for its charming mix of antique shops, art galleries, and restaurants—and it’s about to get a lot buzzier. The NickelThe new boutique-style hotel will open on June 2nd in Cannonborough.
Following the success of the first opening The Pinch The Nickel will be the second Charleston hotel in 2022 for Philadelphia’s Method Co. The Nickel was designed in partnership by Morris Adjmi Architects, Capital Square, and owner and real-estate developer Capital Square. The new five-story building will include 50 rooms, suites, an interior courtyard filled with greenery, a library and rooftop bar.
“The Nickel is our next love letter to Charleston—a bold continuation of a story that began with The Pinch,” says Daniel Olsovsky, Method Co.’s creative director, in an interview with Travel + Leisure. “We broke the ground in July 2022 just months after we opened The Pinch. We were inspired by the creative energy that was pulsing throughout Upper King Street and Cannonborough.
The name of the hotel is derived from “c’est nickel,” or “it’s impeccable,” a phrase Olsovsky described as capturing “something beautifully executed, just right, effortlessly polished. The spirit of that experience is evident in all the details.
On arrival, guests will receive a complimentary welcome cocktail. (An alcohol-free version is also available). The suites and residential style rooms come with a kitchen equipped with Bosch appliances and honed-marble countertops. They also have washers and dryers. There are separate dining and lounge areas. Mini bars in the rooms are stocked up with local and artisanal treats.
The decor of the hotel seamlessly blends vintage and modern elements. It was designed by Morris Adjmi Architects from New York, which led the building design, interior architecture and Method Co.’s Design arm, Method Studios. Herringbone oak floors, custom-designed beds, and private balconies with views of the interior courtyard are among the design touches.
The dining options at the hotel reflect the creative energy of its surrounding neighborhood. Bar Daniel is a guest-only cocktail bar named after Cannonborough founder Daniel Cannon. It serves everything from late-night drinks to morning espresso in a luxurious setting that includes antique mirrors and sage-colored velvet banquettes. In late June the Rosemary Rose rooftop bar will be opened to the public. It offers small plates and cocktail, as well as panoramic views over Charleston’s skyline, including the Arthur Ravenel, Jr. Bridge.
A complimentary bike-sharing service and a guest-pass to a nearby fitness center with an 82-foot pool and outdoor sport courts are also highlights. The Parlour is an event space with a listening room. It has a private balcony that overlooks the courtyard, and vinyl records.
The Nickel Hotel offers rates starting at $460 per night. You can book your stay online at nickelhotel.com.
