    Gunwalloe in Cornwall, Cornwall:

Cornwall Council has recently restricted the six-month dog ban from many of its beaches to only July/August. The council publishes a list of beachesIt’s important that you check all the restrictions before leaving (there are still some). 11 beaches where dogs are banned between 10am and 6pmThere are also three wildlife protected areas that are prohibited at all times. The beach at is one of our favorites. Gunwalloe The National Trust offers a holiday cottage on the beach with water bowls. Church Cove, however, is only dog-friendly in July and August. Dollar Cove, the cove right next door, is always dog-friendly. You can walk right along the beach and over to Poldhu, Porthleven or even Poldhu.

A dog-friendly hotel in the Lake District

Inn on the Square Hotel, Keswick

Four-star hotels Inn on the Square (doubles from £100 B&B) in Keswick is very dog-friendly. It provides a dog spa – very useful after a lovely walk in the fells – dog beds, and tips on green spaces for dogs to do their business. Keswick, a lovely town, has fantastic pubs overlooking the gorgeous Derwentwater. The hotel charges a nightly supplement of £25 a dog. Two dogs are allowed in each bedroom.

North Firbank Cottage (from £700 a week, sleeps four) in the Culzean Castle and Country Park Estate near Maybole is a delightful cottage with two sizeable secure gardens for your dog. The National Trust for Scotland is the owner and it is situated on a small private road which leads to a few rentable cottages. The estate has a public car park and lake, a cafe, and a children’s adventure playground. A large sandy beach with views of Ailsa Craig and Arran is just a few minutes away in the opposite direction. Miles of footpaths are included in the Culzean Estate price, along with admission to the Castle (but dogs are not allowed inside).

    Isle of Man’s best friend

On the Isle of Man, there are miles of sandy beaches with no lead. There are 18 preserved national glens all suitable for off-lead walking – with clean rivers to splash in – and several have a lovely beach at the end. Dash around Gansey Bay beach In the south (dogs are welcome year-round), you can sit in the bar with your well behaved dog. Shore Hotel Overlooking the bay.

    Pamper your pooch in Norfolk

‘We’ve been expecting you …’ East Ruston Cottages are particularly dog-friendly

East Ruston Cottages In north-east Norfolk, there are a lot of dog-friendly cottages that provide everything you and your pet need. All cottages allow at least 3 dogs. The cottage that we stayed at earlier this year included a dog bath, toys, towels and treats for our border collie. We also enjoyed it. Even dog sitters are available if required.

    Anglesey beach walkies are bracing

Ynys Môn (Anglesey) is the sort of place where you wake to gulls not traffic. We booked a bungalow above Red Wharf Bay Each morning, we spent the tide-out hours sand-struding. Traeth LligwyDogs off lead, noses full of sea salt and dogs not on a leash. Fish and chips were served outside. Ship Inn Water bowls are displayed before the menus. The dog-friendly café at the hotel is a great option for rainy days. Oriel Môn Museum and art centre, or woodland walks through Newborough Forest. Red squirrels fly overhead. Our spaniel would snore beside the log fire while we planned our ideal beach for tomorrow.

    Pooch loose in Pembrokeshire

The Little Retreat has dog domes. Photograph: Owen Howells

Explore ancient oak woods and secret beach at The Little Retreat in Lawrenny (domes sleeping four from £120 a night), Pembrokeshire. These luxury domes overlook the sea and are nestled in a walled garden at a 12th century castle. Daugleddau estuary – perfect for wild swims and kayak adventures. You can also visit the grounds of Carew Castle, which welcomes dogs on a lead. The tranquility, history and charm of this place is unmatched.

Cotswolds is a great place to get the tails wagging

We had a great time on our visit to the De Vere at Cotswolds Water Park With our dog. Our ground floor room was equipped with doors that opened onto a vast wetland view and a boardwalk where our dog could pootle. There are all the usual extras like beds, etc. and you can even take your dog out to breakfast or use the spa. Dogs love the nearby towns like Cirencester, but the most popular was the Cotswold Wildlife Park Nearby, there is a fantastic dog-friendly animal park (dogs should be kept on leads) and gardens.

    Ballymastocker Beach, County Donegal

Rita’s cottages in Portsalon County Donegal were where we spent summers of our childhood. The accommodation was simple and inexpensive. Sandy, Sandy’s faithful dog, could stay with us every year, even though there was no TV, heating or shower. The accommodation is still the same but we go back every year. Pier Apartments (from €310 for two nights, two apartments, sleep 5 each) has been massively upgraded. However, some things remain the same. There are still many kids jumping off the pier into the harbour. Ballymastocker Beach, which is dog-friendly, remains the best beach in the world. Sandy has been replaced with Benji.

Winning tip: Mull – the isle of dogs

George the labrador in Mull Photograph: Hywel S. Sedgwick

Isle of Mull has the best dog-friendly environment I’ve visited. George the labrador was welcomed with open arms on the ferry crossing from Oban – where they even had a special dog seating area with bowls of water and treats available. Dogs can explore the beautiful beaches without a lead. Even the tiny foot ferry to The Boathouse He made friends with celebrity dog at Ulva restaurant GrampaBanjo Beale is a well-known designer of interiors.
