The sun was setting over Mount Pisgah on what felt like an autumn day in February. I walked along the French Broad River barefoot. The contrast between my morning and afternoon was crystal clear—the utter chaos of scurrying to the airport during New York City rush hour, and the sense of calm that washed over me just a few hours later when I arrived at The Horse Shoe Farm in Hendersonville, North Carolina.
The boutique farm resort offers guests a space for relaxation, healing, and grounding. I could not have felt more grounded with my bare toes. The Horse Shoe Farm has a special place for me in my travel heart. Since opening in 2018, this family-owned, operated business has grown to be a strong pillar in the community. It was made even stronger after Hurricane Helene. The property was used as the home base of the nonprofits Ariel Recovery and Global Empowerment Mission for the first wave relief efforts. It also provided meals to local residents.
Jordan Turchin, a property manager, said to me at the start of my stay that privacy and peace are two of the most important things he thinks one can enjoy. His wife Rachel and he lived in New York City, Miami and other places before moving to Hendersonville. He is no stranger to big-city life.
I know it all too well, too—it’s easy to lose yourself in the chaos. The Horse Shoe Farm provided me with the space and clarity I needed to take a breath for the first in what seemed like years.
What’s it like to stay at The Horse Shoe Farm?
The Rooms
Taylor Heery/The Horse Shoe Farm
Boutique farm resort offers a range of accommodation options, including “estate” houses, two-room cabins and charming loft suites. This property can house up to 75 people. The rooms are all spacious, luxurious and eclectic.
All the rooms reflected the Turchin’s passion for design and art. Vintage furnishings, artifacts from around the world, and crystal instruments are just some of your personal touches. They all have their own flair and personality.
I stayed at the Blue Heron Suite, one of the newly constructed Pond Cottages. It felt like my personal oasis—I watched the sky and the surrounding mountains in the distance turn a silky pink each evening from the private deck as wind chimes rang in the breeze. Each Pond Cottage has a gas fireplace that stands alone, a rain shower and a deep tub. I thoroughly enjoyed them all.
Food and Drink
The Horse Shoe Farm offers one on-site dining option. Silo CookhouseIt offers a modern, farm-to table dining experience. The food is either grown in-house or from local farmers. The space can be used as a lounge, lobby, and communal dining room.
Silo is all for intention, community and purpose. My server was informed of my Celiac condition and I asked him about gluten-free alternatives. Chef Dan Williams welcomed me to my table almost immediately and told me that his wife also has Celiac disease. He listed all of the items that were gluten-free on the list and assured that they would take extra care to prepare my meal safely. The above-and-beyond attitude was also reflected in the food—and especially in the banana cheesecake, which I ordered three times.
Silo’s meals are served on family-style dining tables. This allows guests to easily connect with each other or eat together with a large number of loved ones. It is called a “Modern Farm to Table Dinner Party” and it felt like one every night.

The “Ponder Wander” was my favorite activity. It’s a self-guided tour of the 85 acres. The map is based on the four elements of water, fire, earth and air. It’s not a spoiler, but on your journey you might come across a meditation maze.
You can also invite guests to participate. wellness classesI have tried meditation, yoga and sound healing. Rachele Scevola is a breath work coach, a nurse and accompanies guests in her sessions. Scevola created a safe, warm environment for me to learn the practice. I have carried this skill with me ever since.
The Horse Shoe Farm is a place where you are surrounded by animals. This aspect of your stay at the farm may be underrated, but I found it to be very enjoyable. I was able to pet horses and saw chickens and goats on the property.
