Great hiking trails are available throughout the Great Smoky Mountains. Alum Cave Trail Kuwohi can be reached by a one-mile-round-trip walk. Formerly called Clingman’s Dome the highest point within the park has been officially rechristened as the traditional Cherokee name since 2024.
Mingus Mill has a restored 19th-century mill at a lower altitude (and better in the later part of the season). The short trail is a great place to stretch your legs before driving the Blue Ridge Parkway. Coggins claims that “anyone can do the hike.” “It’s really pretty, and it’s got the open fields—elk are there every morning. You can walk along the river. It’s a little village that has been set up.
On the Parkway I would also recommend the 1-mile hike. Waterrock Knob. The Blue Ridge Parkway’s highest visitor center is located in this tranquil area, just a quick drive from Cherokee. It offers 360-degree panoramic views of the Southern Appalachian Mountains.
Cherokee is not just about leaf-peeping or hiking. There are many other activities to enjoy. Anglers can find plenty of trout fishing in Oconaluftee Islands Park Whitewater Landing Park, which was recently opened. It is important to get to know the culture of this region.
Head to the Museum of the Cherokee People Explore exhibits that document the history, heritage and arts of this region’s first inhabitants. Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians still preserves the vibrant cultural traditions of the tribe and its language in Cherokee.

The living history exhibit includes demonstrations of community craft and dance, while the theatrical performance is an overview of Eastern Band’s past, which is staged every year in an outdoor amphitheater between May and August.

Camping in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park is a good choice for a peaceful night’s rest. Newfound Gap Road takes less than 15 minute. Smokemont Campground The park is open all year round and offers amenities such as spacious tent pads and a fire ring.
Coggins says that if a hotel is not an option, “for everyone who likes the lights and dancing, we have the casino.” The Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians is in charge of the casino. Harrah’s Cherokee Casino Resort Mandara Spa, with its elevated Mandara Spa, has over 1,800 rooms as well as two swimming pools.
