Warm weather Meaning that outdoor weddings, tropical vacations. Euro trips are upon us—and that tight dresses and constrictive resort-wear might be in our future. Shapewear is your secret to curve hugging dresses, fitted gowns, semi-see-through skirts and semi-see through white dresses. The best shapewear should be comfortable, supportive and undetectable. We can look and feel better and focus on the event in front of our eyes, instead of worrying about our clothes.

Since years, I’ve packed shapewear in my suitcase. It can be worn under anything from a satin wedding dress to a bridesmaid gown for a wedding. Tuscany A super-tight dress for a girls trip The following are some examples of how to use Miami. Each time I pack it, I am glad I did. I see a good piece shapewear as a little secret weapon that provides comfort and protection to me without anyone else knowing.

Do shapewear really work? Will I be uncomfortable wearing it? Can anyone tell that I am wearing it? With the right shapewear, you’ll look just as good as you feel—and no one will know a thing. In the past, corsets and other girdles were considered uncomfortable or shameful. But thanks to brands such as SkimsToday’s shapewear has become a standard in our luggage. This is the accessory that will enhance any outfit.

Because there is no one size fits all solution for shapewear, and because every body and outfit has different needs and requirements, our editors tried out a variety styles from top brands including Skims, Spanx and Yitty. Our list of favorites is below. We’ll be packing them this summer, and for years to come. These shapewear pieces cover every occasion, from sculpting underwear and seamless shorts to smoothing slipdresses and versatile bodysuits.

Our editors evaluated each shapewear piece for its overall fit, comfort, support, opaqueness, and the difficulty of putting it on. Our editors also considered the performance of each piece, such as its ability to smooth and sculpt. Our favorite was made from a soft, stretchy fabric that didn’t dig in to our skin or squeeze too tightly. We also took into account brand inclusivity by ensuring that a range of sizes and colors are available.

We spent months testing the most popular shapes from top-selling brands in order to find out which are worth the hype. These pieces were worn under dresses at weddings, on vacations and for business trips. We were able to see which styles we could wear all day and which ones we wanted to remove. Each piece was also tested for ease of use. We looked at whether it was hard to put on or take off, and if the pieces were difficult to pull down when taking a bathroom break. And of course, our top picks really worked their magic—smoothing and sculpting in all the right places and enhancing our natural curves. We tested most of the shapewear in the below list over the last few weeks, but we also included some longtime favorites our editors pack every day, like Gatherall’s nipple sleeves and Skims’ compressive bodysuit.

    Sculpting shorts

Yitty High Waist Shorts Nearly Naked

Since years, I have been looking for a pair of good sculpting briefs. I’ve been searching for a good pair of sculpting shorts for years. Yitty’s Nearly Naked High-Waist Shorts might be my favorite pair. It was surprising how easy it was to slip this sculpting underwear on. It smoothed my stomach and thighs, without digging into me or squeezing too tightly. It is lightweight, breathable and perfectly stretchy. I love wearing it underneath. summer wedding guest dresses. The waistband of the top short is thick and compressive, which helps to smoothen without sliding. This pair was worn under a dress at a christening. It was comfortable to wear all day and did the job of smoothing out and sculpting. Best of all, I feel like I can actually take a deep breath and forget I even have these on—not something I can say for all shapewear.

Pros: Breathable material, moisture-wicking fabric, sizes range from XS–5XL
The Cons of UsingSize up if in between sizes

    Model in beige shape wear

Skims Seamless Sculpt mid Thigh short

Skims shapewear is the best when it comes to compression. These mid-thigh shorts sculpted my thighs and stomach. The seamless fabric of Skims is soft and smooth, and comes in a wide range of colors and sizes. The only thing I don’t like about these shorts is how tight they are. You can also find out more about us on our website. tight. Of course that’s kind of the point—after all, they are designed to provide maximum compression—but these felt less forgiving than other shapewear I’ve tried. These also took me about a minute to put on. That’s something to consider when you need to go to the bathroom while wearing a dress. These are the perfect pair if you want maximum compression on a dress that is tight. If you want to prioritize comfort and something that you can wear every day, then these may not be the best choice for you. (Or size up if you need a bit more room).

Pros: Unseen underneath dresses, smooth fabric, inclusive sizing
The Cons of UsingIt runs small. The fabric is very tight compared to the other pieces that I tried.

The Yitty Nearly Naked Booty lift short

If you are looking for a short with a combination core control, buttlifting, and leg sculpting Yitty’s Nearly Naked Booty Lift will be a good choice. The other sculpting underwear we tested provided decent tummy support, but this pair is extremely high-waisted. It offers support right up to the torso. Travel Bookings Editor: “This pair does not roll down on the top or legs and there are no visible lines.” Jamie Spain. This is all due to the silicone gripper that holds the waistband in place. Also, the cleverly designed inseam prevents the legs from rolling. This pair also has a unique design on the back, which lifts and shapes the butt. Spain appreciates how this pair smooths out the stomach, butt and thighs, without being restrictive. This makes it easier to wear in casual settings. You can’t pair this pair with dresses with very low backs or mini dresses.

Pros: Moisture-wicking, bathroom-friendly open gusset, waistband doesn’t roll down
The Cons of UsingDoesn’t tighten the waist much

    Bodysuits

    Skims Seamless Mid Thigh Bodysuit

“When I first took this out of the package, I thought there was no way it was going to fit—it looks teensy,” says associate commerce director Madison Flager. It’s more comfortable and stretchier than I thought it would be. (Though if you want to get into it with less effort, I recommend going up a size). For all-around comfort and support beneath a long gownWe recommend a seamless sculpting style like this one from Skims. It not only offers compression around the core and thighs, but also functions as your built in bra. Flager says, “It smooths out your waist under a dress and top with a skirt and offers great compression.” “I’ve never had any trouble with the legs slipping up. The chest area is also very supportive, even for those who have a large chest.” It’s available in several colorways, from sand to onyx, and sizes from 2XS–4XL.

Pros: Adjustable straps, bathroom-friendly open gusset
The Cons of UsingIt takes some effort to move forward

    Skims Seamless Sculpt brief bodysuit

This was the very first piece of shapewear I got my hands on a few years ago—and it’s still one of my most-worn bodysuits. Skim’s Seamless Sculpt Bodysuit is a viral hit for its impressive core compression. It’s a great way to cinch in your waist without feeling like a corset. It works well as a bra and smooths out my tummy. I use it under tight dresses. It provides good support for the chest without being bulky like a bra. It’s versatility is what I love most about this bodysuit and why it has been a Skims best seller. It’s shapewear but I like to wear it as a tanktop tucked in a pair. jeans Or shorts. The bodysuit is not shapewear, and it can be worn with any shorts or pants. The size is also a big plus. carry-on You can forget it is there.

Pros: Can be worn on its own, adjustable straps, cotton gusset with a snap closure
The Cons of UsingThe brief will show some lines depending on the bottoms that you are wearing.

    Underwear

    Model in beige thong

    The Spanx Essential Supersmooth thong

Not all formalwear requires full-on shaping. I was looking for seamless thongs that I could wear underneath. white linen skirtsSpanx’s SuperSmooth Essential thong is perfect for dresses, skirts, and anything else that can be a little see-through. The material has a buttery feel and is still holding up after multiple washings (I let the thong air dry). The underwear is high-waisted and provides a bit of compression to the tummy. Choose from a variety of neutral shades, such as Champagne beige. Smoke, navy and black.

    ProsLight support, seamless and breathable
Cons: Support is limited compared to other shapeswear

    Model in black thong

    Thong Spanx Undie-tectable Supersmooth

A smoothing Thong can be worn with anything, from dresses without a back to miniskirts. Spanx Supersmooth is a line of underwear that’s superlightweight, breathable, elastic-free, and super breathable. Undie-tectable Spanx thongs offer a bit more core support than the Essential Spanx thong. Flager says these shapewear are perfect for daily use. “They provide coverage to your lower midsection with no discomfort.” I’ve worn these under dresses, skirts and high-waisted pants and love them. The high waisted thong is placed just below your bellybutton, giving you ample tummy support. Flager says they’re “super comfortable, available in tons of colors and won’t leave any marks under clothing.” Hang-dry them as directed to prolong the life of the product.

Pros: Light compression, no panty lines, pretty affordable
The Cons of UsingLimitation in the shape of other pieces

    package of nude nipple covers

    Gatherall nipple cover

Sometimes I need something, even though I don’t want to wear one. Gatherall’s nipple covers really are my secret weapon when I don’t want to—or can’t—wear a bra. These go with everything: strapless gowns, backless dresses and tube tops to see-through bodies. These nipple cover are different from other covers that I have tried. They stay on, even when I start to sweat. And they do not irritate my body after I remove them. The silicone adhesive covers have a thicker center to provide ample coverage. They are thinner at the edges, creating a seamless finish. Also, you can wear them again and again. Gatherall recommends wearing these washable, reusable covers up to 30 times, but I think I may have worn mine even more than that—and they are still going strong.

Pros: Waterproof and sweat-proof; washable and reusable up to 30 times; comes in a compact, packable tube
The Cons of UsingIt provides a light coverage but little support

    Slip dresses

Model in black shape wear dress

    Slip Spanx Socialight Supersmooth

“At the beginning, I wasn’t sure how this Spanx slipdress would fit,” says commerce journalist Jessica Chapel. “I was feeling confident and hard-launched the bad boy for a sweaty morning of exploring streets in New Orleans—and to my surprise it worked well with my body.” Spanx’s Supersmooth slip is the perfect solution for anyone looking to layer under semi-sheer clothes or a breathable short to wear during warm weather. Chapel says, “This super-soft microfabric slip, which is stretchy and quick-drying, kept me comfortable even in New Orleans’ humid heat.” The adjustable straps don’t dig in your shoulders like many other slips or tanks that I have owned. The versatility of this base layer makes it perfect for summer outfits. Chapel said that the first few wearings were a bit uncomfortable and took some time to break it in. After a couple of wears, and a spin in the washer machine, this item fits perfectly.

Pros: Gentle compression, adjustable straps, versatile look
Cons: Straps may be difficult to adjust

Model in black shape wear dress

The Nearly Naked dress is a convertible dress by Yitty.

We knew we’d have to test it when we learned that Yitty has a shapewear dress which can be worn 5 different ways. “When I slipped into this dress, it felt like a second skin—smooth, sculpting, and surprisingly breathable,” says commerce writer Paris Wilson. “The fabric is buttery smooth and molds to my body in the most flattering way—it’s got that sculpted, snatched look without sacrificing comfort.” The convertible straps on the dress can be changed and worn in several different ways. “I love how versatile the convertible straps are; the ability to change up the style really makes you feel like you get your money’s value, making it an essential for your capsule closet.”

Pros: Versatile, breathable, comes in many different colorways
The Cons of UsingYou might find that it’s a little tight, especially at the chest, if you are between sizes. The compression can help shape the body, but it’s a little warm in warmer weather.
