What a change a decade can make. Portland, Maine is no longer the quaint little bastion of nautical kitsch that it once was. There are now many more inspiring hotels and places to stay for visitors. Welcome to a new era in hospitality for this (yes, still tiny) city that is rapidly changing. The city’s hotel industry has also grown over the past decade or so, as its reputation has expanded to include gastronomy (including craft beer), arts and culture. What used to be a cluster of perfunctory chains in touristy Old Port, a few more out by the airport, and a handful of quaint B&Bs sprinkled about, is now a true destination where you can find exactly the sort of stay you’re looking for.

If you want a luxurious stay, want to earn rewards points, are interested in a romantic rendezvous, or just want something different, Portland has dozens of hotels that will meet your needs. In the historic West End are luxurious inns, elegant boutique hotels, and cool, new options on the waterfront. You can also escape to idyllic resorts near the city. The service levels at each of these hotels have also evolved to suit your preferences, from white glove hand-holding to contactless checking-in. What about the city’s signature nautical flair? You’ll still find plenty of it all over the city, albeit in different form these days—think less Ye Olde fisherman, more contemporary artisan.
