New Yorkers love to hang out at the bar of their hotel, like going to a Yankees’ game or visiting the Met. Since we live here, we don’t need to book a hotel room. But a good hotel is not just a place for travelers to sleep—within the walls of each exists a sort of alternate reality, a fantasy world, a distortion. The bar in the lobby, or the rooftop can allow everyone to enjoy this creation. When designed correctly, the hotel bar is the beating heart of the place—a scene, a convention point, a people watcher’s paradise. Locals and guests may be seated on a barstool, or in a small booth. A pop star who is in town to shoot a film has a tense conversation with a creative in the corner. The co-workers are here for business and they discuss an affair while drinking Old Fashioneds. Martinis come in all shapes and sizes, the lights are dim but not so dim that you cannot see.
You may not believe us, but hotel bars are some of the most popular bars in NYC. Here are some of the best NYC hotel bars, along with a few of our favorites. Locals, consider stopping by for a drink just like you would in your neighborhood watering holes. Visitors: We are not saying that the bar should determine your choice of accommodation, but it is something to consider.
