Before Monos’s expandable collection was launched last summer, Commerce Editor Meaghan Kenny’s Most-used and most beloved carry-on luggage the brand’s original carry-on. While it was praised for its smooth wheels and organization of the interior, she had one complaint about its size. “I always overpack, so the extra room is very important to me.” When an expandable version launched, she couldn’t wait to get her hands on it—and it’s lived up to expectations. “I’ve had this carry-on for over a year now and it’s my absolute go-to carry-on,” Kenny says. There are many things to love: The sleek exterior is beautiful and it can handle a great deal. It’s been thrown into the backs of Ubers, and in overhead compartments. There are few marks to show.
It is very spacious, which is a great feature for those who tend to overpack. “I took this bag with me to Scottsdale, Arizona for a summer bachelorette’s party. It held several bathingsuits, cover-ups and dresses, as well as two pairs sandals and two pairs heels. My toiletry bag was also in it. When I arrived, the bride gave me a sweatshirt with some accessories. “I was afraid it wouldn’t all fit, but I found that the expandable zip came in handy and gave me some extra inches when I really needed it.”
A zippered compartment inside the suitcase has a large mesh area that allows you to separate items like wet bathing suits or liquids. The suitcase’s other side has a removable, built-in compression pad and a zippered pouch for flat items. The compression pad helps keep items flat and secure. This allows me to fit more clothing. At $325, it’s reasonably priced—especially when considering its expandability, durability, and sleek look, Kenny says. I’ve used much more expensive carry ons that were scuffed after just one trip. This carry-on has enough durability to withstand a little wear and tear, while offering lots of organizational features. I think it’s well worth the cost.
Pros: Expandable compression system with extra-smooth wheels, TSA approved lock
Cons: It’s not the lightest carry on I’ve used. The bag is bulky when expanded.
