Wool socks are my first choice for any occasion, whether I’m lounging or going on an adventure in cold weather, or hiking during warm temperatures. I use Smartwool or Ibex socks for all my trips and adventures.

Wool is a superior material for all purposes. Wool socks are ideal because they have moisture-wicking and temperature-regulating properties. We tested 15 pairs wool-blends socks because they are travel-friendly. They were evaluated for their comfort, fit quality and breathability. These wool socks are perfect for sightseeing or sitting in a plane. They have a comfortable fit and a high quality feel.

Our tests gave the L.L.Bean Adults Merino Ragg Socks top marks, making them our overall best pick. These socks were worn for over 24 hours during a long flight to Europe (and an extra-long day of travel). We noticed that these socks maintained their shape after walking more than 20,000 feet in a single day. They also showed minimal shrinkage and stretching. The stretchiness added to their comfort, and they were great at regulating temperature. We liked that they didn’t bunch and stayed put. It’s important to consider the type of shoes you plan to wear them with. Our feet did not feel sweaty even when they became hot. The fact that the socks come in a 2-pack is another plus. There were some loose threads after a few days of wearing them, but not excessive.

The thin, light cushioning provides comfort and support for the arch while maintaining a slim profile. The ankle height works for running shoes Or low hiking shoes. The moisture-wicking qualities of the socks helped us to enjoy a comfortable run, even when we ran longer distances. These socks have held up very well, and they’ve stayed the same size over time.

The Other Wool Socks that We Like

Some of the wool socks we tested did not make the cut, but some of them have great features and might be suitable for some.

Dale of Norway Myking Wool Socks Crew Cut: They were stylish and comfortable for long days. The material of the socks stretched out over time, and they were difficult to take off because their cuffs didn’t have much elasticity.

Finisterre Ribbed Sock: These socks are unique and retro in design. We found them well-made with a durable construction, which didn’t deteriorate or pill. The fabric was not very soft and snug, which affected comfort.

    Test Process

The T+L team tested 15 pairs of socks, both for hiking and leisure activities. We assessed each pair based on fit and features like reinforced toes and heel, seams or ribbings, cushioning or arch support, as well as the type of fabric. We also looked at the fabric to see if they were moisture-wicking or temperature-regulating, and how stretchy or thick they felt. We then wore the garments for short and long periods to do activities that we usually do such as running errands and exercising.

After wearing them for hours, we evaluated how they performed and felt. We also looked at their durability and fabric quality, noting any stretch, shrinking, or pilling. They were also washed multiple times, to test their durability, and the quality of the fabric. We noted any stretching, shrinking or pilling.

Wool Socks – Tips to Buy Them

Understanding the different types of wool

It’s important to know the different types of wool that are used in wool socks before you buy them. Wool from sheep is warm even when it’s wet. But it’s not made for activities like running or hiking, and it can be a bit itchy. Merino is the most popular type of wool used in socks. It comes from Merino sheep and has the ability to keep your feet warm while wicking away moisture, keeping them dry. Alpaca and cashmere are also popular types of wool for socks because they have a soft, luxurious feel. However, these materials tend to be more expensive and less durable. To create socks with good stretch and shape retention, most socks use a mixture of polyester, spandex, or nylon.

Breathability and moisture-wicking are important considerations

If you plan to wear socks outdoors or for long days, make sure to choose ones with moisture-wicking and breathability properties. This will ensure that your feet remain dry and regulated. Socks with more wool are better because wool is good at wicking moisture and regulating temperature. Odor control is closely related to temperature regulation, moisture wicking and also odor control. Sweaty feet can produce unwanted odors on both socks and feet. A higher wool content will keep your socks smelling fresh.

    Common Questions

    • What is the ideal percentage of wool to use for socks and what are the benefits?

Most socks contain between 30 percent to 80 percent wool. It is recommended that socks with wool content between 40 and 50 percent are worn for everyday casual wear. However, for activities like hiking or running where there is a lot of impact, it is better to choose something higher in percentage. Merino wool socks need to be blended with synthetic materials for durability and stretch.

    • Wool socks are warmer than cotton socks

The natural ability of cotton socks to regulate temperature and regulate moisture is what makes them warmer. Cotton socks may be breathable but they can also hold moisture if your feet are sweating. It can cause your feet to smell, feel clammy and be uncomfortable after a long day on your feet.
