After living in Seattle, the wettest city in the U.S. for over five years, my collection of rain gear is extensive. A good old-fashioned rain jacket is functional, but a trench coat gives me more style as I walk around New York City.
Travel + Leisure Editors and testers tested trench coats by trusted outerwear brands in order to find the best options for travel. We took note of how the fabric performed in adverse weather conditions, whether it wrinkles easily and how comfortable they were to wear.

Lands’ End’s waterproofed trench coat strikes the perfect balance between style and functionality. The classic trench coat features a collar, storm flaps and shoulder epaulettes. It also has double-breasted button. We wore it for indoor and outdoor activities in temperatures as low 28 degrees. We stayed dry and warm during the entire testing period thanks to the fully waterproof fabric and seam-sealed construction. The jacket is a little too small. We sized up and were able to move freely.
The jacket is made of polyester and rayon. This keeps its weight low, making it easier to carry in a suitcase or wear during warmer weather. Although the jacket wrinkled, it was much less than other options like cotton or linen that are more prone to crease. It would have been even better if the belt at the waist had a buckle, for a more refined look.

The Alo Crinkle on the Move Trench is a great choice for travel because of its superior packability. T+L assistant editor Jessica Vadillo This jacket is fully waterproof. It was tested in the rain, and she didn’t even feel damp when it was removed. It’s easy to layer under the jacket because of the oversized fit. The nylon material is lightweight and thin, so you will want to use it as a base. Vadillo found that wearing a sweatshirt beneath the jacket was very comfortable. She also sized down so as to achieve a slightly more tailored look. The jacket packs up easily because it is lightweight. It has a removable, fleece-lined interior, making it super easy to add bulk or reduce it. Vadillo added, “I’m planning to bring it to London on my next trip because I love how small and stylish it is.”

This trench from Gap features a classic color and silhouette. It is available in a classic khaki shade and features double-breasted buttons, an over-sized collar, and front-tie belt. The jacket’s lightweight design is perfect for travel. The jacket’s natural fibers, 65 percent of cotton and 35 per cent polyester, keep it breathable while the synthetic fibers provide water resistance and warmth. The water resistance worked well as we were soaked from the rain. We recommend wearing the jacket underneath a thicker coat when traveling to colder climates. The thin sweater worked well, but anything heavier restricted mobility in the arm. It does wrinkle a little, but most of it will disappear as you wear the jacket.

This Lilysilk trench coat was exactly what I had been looking for. The outer fabric is made of wool and the lining is silk. This gives it a luxurious look on the inside. The khaki colour gives it a classic trench look, making it easy to wear with jeans, a T-shirt, and heels during the day or a dress for an evening event. I wore it in the winter and early Spring when temperatures hovered at around 40 degrees. The jacket kept me warm, especially with a heavy sweater underneath. It was comfortable in spring, when the weather was milder. The belt looks great with the buckles open or closed. The belt is too long and the tail hangs in the back when I don’t double wrap it.

Mackage’s double-face virgin wool trench coat is a jacket I have worn constantly since adding it to my closet. Made from double-faced virgin sheep wool, it is warmer than the average trench but still very breathable. Wool is water-resistant, and it regulates temperature, so you can wear it all year round. The trench’s fit and style are both very stylish. I get compliments almost every time I wear it. The asymmetrical front flap and dark and light brown colorblocking add a contemporary touch to a classic front-button style. The waist belt is great for cinching my jacket around my waist. It can be worn with the buttons or without them for different styling options.

A jacket that is oversized, like this one by Oak + Fort, is easy to throw on with any outfit. This is perfect for travel when your outfit options are limited. Parker, who owns multiple trenches and countless jackets, was impressed by this one, mainly because of its high quality. The lining inside the jacket makes it warm and protective. How to Buy a Trenchcoat for Women
Prioritize versatility
You may have only room for two jackets, depending on your luggage and the type of trip you are taking. Choose a trench that can be worn for a variety of occasions. You should choose a waterproof trench coat, and not one that’s just water-resistant, if you are traveling in a more rainy climate. A jacket with a breathable fabric, such as cotton or linen, and ventilation is recommended for warmer destinations.
Consider how it will fit.
The fit of a trench coat can have a big impact on how often it is worn. It’s easier to layer if you have an oversized coat. But a more tailored fit can put some people off. If you want to look more sophisticated with a slimmer trench, it’s not possible to layer underneath. Make sure you check out the size charts and reviews. You can also look for petite, plus, or tall sizes.
Common Questions
-
What is a trenchcoat?
Trench coats were created for British soldiers to provide extra protection against the elements. They are made from heavy-duty, water-resistant cotton. Modern trench coats have many of the same features as their predecessors. They include chest flaps and storm flaps. There is also ventilation, removable belts, wide lapels, raglan sleeves and a removable waistband. The majority of trench coats aren’t waterproof anymore (they are either water resistant or they aren’t at all). Instead, they are made out of lighter cotton and synthetic fabrics.
-
When should I wear my trench coat?
Spring and fall are the seasons where trench coats are worn most often, as they are usually worn when the weather is transitional. Trench coats can be worn year-round or in winter, depending on their design.
-
What is the best way to wear a trenchcoat?
Trench coats can be found in a variety of shapes, so the fit is ultimately up to you. A jacket that is more relaxed in fit can give a casual look, but a slimmer trench coat gives a more elegant look. Check the product specs and reviews for your perfect fit. If you are on the edge of petite size, check the length of the coat as some jackets run longer than others. While a longer trench can provide better protection against the rain, it may be too much for some.
