Oahu offers a wide range of accommodations, from affordable beachside hotels to oceanfront resorts. I’ve been to 15 resorts in Oahu. Oahu—both in Honolulu and beyond the city—and I always come back to Sheraton Waikiki Beach Resort for one simple reason: It has everything you need for a perfect stay.
Staying in the heart of busy Waikiki may sound unappealing to some, I love being close to a long list of activities and restaurants—not to mention staying directly on an iconic beach—but also being able to tuck away into a secluded poolside cabana or float in the adults-only infinity pool.
I remember the first time I checked-in and went up to my bedroom, opening the balcony door and stepping outside, thinking, “This is exactly like a post card.” The sound of the Pacific lapping at the shoreline as I drank Kona coffee in my balcony was bliss. And the panoramic view of Waikiki Beach—where sunbathers and umbrellas dot the sand like colorful pieces of confetti—and iconic Diamond Head crater from nearly every vantage point of the property, are second to none.
The location of the resort in Waikiki is ideal for travelers. It’s just steps away from the beach, and it’s a short stroll to many award-winning restaurants. The Royal Hawaiian Center was just a short walk away, and I could easily grab some shaved ice, coffee, or Hula Pie at Duke’s.

The resort revealed a $200-million renovation of all 1,636 guest rooms and suites in 2020. But due to COVID-19’s strict protocols, guests couldn’t fully enjoy this upgrade until the middle of 2022. Although I liked the Sheraton’s look before, it is now fresher and more modern with its wood tones, soft shades and soft colours.
Here is my review on Sheraton’s Waikiki Beach resort, which celebrates 54 years in 2019.
The Rooms
The hotel offers 12 categories of accommodation, and nearly 1,700 suites. The High Oceanfront Room is the most economical option for me and my husband. Each room has a mini-fridge, coffee maker, and many outlets to charge your phones. Sheraton Sleep Experience Beds are also included.
Bathrooms are small, but they come equipped with all the essentials (a toothbrush, toothpaste, shampoo, conditioner and hairdryer) and even a bidet for the toilet. For standard rooms, slippers and gowns are available on request.
The Kai Ocean Suite is a great choice for a luxurious stay. It has two oceanfront balconies, so you can enjoy the sunrises and sundowns every day. The living room is also large enough to accommodate a lot of people.
Bookings can request accessible options for most room types. The resort is family-friendly, with a range of accessible rooms and the two-bedroom Ohana Suite. Travel + Leisure. “Families are spending quality time together at all ages, from toddlers to teenagers to grandparents.”
Food and Drink
Sheraton Waikiki Beach Resort
The food options at the Sheraton are solid, starting with the continental breakfast at Kai Market, which includes plenty of fresh, tropical fruit, local favorites like Portuguese sausage, and a made-to-order omelet (get the crispy potatoes as a side)—my personal favorite menu item.
RumFire Beach bar is a must-visit. Don’t miss the mai tai flight featuring locally made Kuleana Rum or one of the many zero-proof options, like Graveyards—a blend of calamansi juice, pineapple juice, and soda water.
The hotel’s Edge of Waikiki Pool Bar is my favourite spot to dine on-site. The Buddha Bowl with its mix of greens and quinoa with beets, avocado, ube and quinoa is a favorite. Also, I enjoy the variety of fresh poke dishes like the ahi poké flatbread, which comes with spicy aioli. All of the signature cocktails have been named after famous Waikiki surfing spots. Calame says, “We are excited to create culinary adventures that prioritize wellness and freshness. This will ensure our guests feel refreshed.”
