The results of a recent survey conducted MEININGER HotelsIn collaboration with Appinio, a market research institute,, analyzed the city travel preferences of Germans. In a survey of 2,101 participants between 16 and 65 years old, it was found that Germans, despite their regional differences, have similar preferences for city trips. The survey was focused on trips lasting between two and four days, and it highlighted that location, price and cleanliness were the most important factors in choosing accommodation.

    Regional Travel Tendencies

In the survey, nine percent of Berliners travel more than six time a year compared to four percent for the national average. The survey revealed that northern Germans, especially those in Schleswig-Holstein (Hamburg), Bremen and Bremen are more reserved. In fact, a large percentage of them do not even visit cities.

    Travel companions and budgets

Germans are more likely to choose to travel with a partner than in a small group. Solo travel also makes a notable appearance, with 17 percent of travellers regularly travelling alone. Hamburg is more inclined to solo trips than other cities, with 30 percent.

In terms of travel budgets, almost half of the respondents have a limit of 500-1000 euros per person. For 40 percent, their expenses are below 500 euro. The survey highlighted that travelers from Rhineland-Palatinate, Lower Saxony, and Saxony are particularly budget-conscious, with a significant portion spending less than 500 euros per person.

    Accommodation Preferences

Germans are more likely to choose hotels than vacation rentals. Price is most important to 67 percent, followed by location and cleanliness. Travelers in Saxony-Anhalt are most price-conscious. Those who come from Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and Schleswig-Holstein prioritize cleanliness.

In addition, the survey found that city visitors spend between 50-100 euros per night on accommodations per person. Travelers from Saxony, Mecklenburg and Western Pomerania spend less than 50 Euros per night.

    Recreational Activities and Regional Differences

Food and drinks are the top leisure activity for city visitors. 57 percent prioritize food and drinks. The trend is similar across all federal states. The most popular activities include sightseeing, culture, shopping and entertainment.

Leisure preferences vary from region to region. In Baden-Württemberg, sightseeing is highly valued alongside culinary experiences. Saxony visitors are interested in cultural experiences, while Bremen residents prefer relaxation activities. Brandenburgers love shopping while Hamburgers prefer entertainment like concerts and festivals.
