Since last Spring, Nolita’s institution has been shut down to allow for the largest project of its history: Doubling gallery space.

OMA/Shohei Shigematsu, Rem Koolhaas and Cooper Robertson designed the 60,000-square foot building expansion. The new building is a visual delight: from the exterior, it will appear as two distinct structures, but on the inside, the floors 2 to 4 will be connected.

The new building’s three additional terraces will look out onto Bowery, and the Sky Room on the top floor will be doubled in size. The new spaces upstairs will include a 74 seat forum for public programming, space for artist residencies, and a home built for the cultural incubator NEW INC.

This $125 million expansion is primarily designed to improve visitor flow. Three elevators, an Atrium staircase and an Entrance Plaza that can be used as a public art venue in the open air will all contribute to this. The ground-floor expansion will provide a larger restaurant and bookstore. The new building is dedicated to the late philanthropist Toby Devan Lewis.
