It’s rare to wake up under a star-filled night sky and see the morning sun’s reddish orange glow over the vineyards. Montage Healdsburg offers the perfect combination of luxury, wine, and rest.

This hotel was only 90 minutes away from San Francisco. The journey took us across the Golden Gate Bridge into the bay area. rolling Sonoma Hills. We were instantly taken by the design and aesthetic of the property, which can be best described as a rustic modern treehouseThe interior is a warm blend of stone, wood and copper with a leafy view.

We were given a list of things to do and see on the 258 acres of land before we were taken by golf cart to our cliffside suite with breathtaking vineyard views. Montage’s attention to detail ensured a luxurious experience, including everything from goats and sheep (yes, you read that right) and grapes.

The Rooms

The 130 rooms of Montage Healdsburg are a testament to its refined design, which doesn’t sacrifice comfort. The accommodation options are varied, from Vineyard Rooms with a balcony overlooking a grape field or forest to luxurious standalone Guest Houses which have a total of 4,600 square foot and three bedrooms, as well as panoramic views of the property, Mount St. Helena and the surrounding area.

Montage Healdsburg offers stunning rooms in all units, thanks to the indoor/outdoor flow.  Hardwood flooring and marble bathrooms featuring freestanding soak tubs exude luxury while wood, stone, or copper accent each unit. Some even have private fire pits on the balcony—perfect for cool evenings, gazing at the stars.

Food and Drink

There are three restaurants on the property.

You can find a variety of poolside foods at Hudson Springs Bar & Grill Offering coastal-inspired food. The halibut calamari and ceviche are light and refreshing, especially after hours of lounging on our beach chairs. Cortez street tacos are also a great option. If you’re looking for something a little more casual, try the Scout Field BarA lobby bar serving small plates.

The main full service restaurant is Hazel HillMy wife calls it the “fancy-schmancy” option. California-French menus are created using local farm-to -table ingredients. For us, the standouts were the breakfast and seafood. The restaurant’s romantic vineyard view is the best on the whole grounds if you like ambiance.

Activities and Experiences

Yoga Garden in the vineyard is a tranquil place to relax and stretch out stress. Montage Healdsburg’s yoga sessions are set among cabernet-sauvignon vineyards. They combine mindfulness and nature. The one-hour class, which I took as a beginner yogi, was a peaceful escape that allowed me to reconnect with the hotel and its surroundings. Parents, please note that yoga is only open to guests 16 and older. Teenagers and children are not eligible to participate.

If you prefer to keep active in another way, there are hiking, cycling, archery, bocce and pickleball lessons as well as an updated fitness center with all the necessary gym equipment.

The Spa

The 11500-square foot Spa Montage It is a haven of serenity whose treatments reflect its natural beauty. After walking the property’s grounds of 258 acres, and watching the goats grazing (they keep the weeds in check, as they can compete with the vines for water, nutrients, and sunlight), it was wonderful to unwind and relax with a relaxing massage. The spa uses locally-sourced botanicals in each massage, facial or body therapy. My wife told me (after she had a facial that was amazing) that Valmont Skincare is the leading Swiss cosmetics brand. 

Location

Healdsburg can be reached in four miles by those with cabin-fever or the desire to explore. This charming, walkable city is known for its artisanal stores, tasting rooms, farm-to table restaurants, and more. You’re looking for more restaurants and wineries? The hotel is only about an hour from nearby towns like Geyserville, California, and Santa Rosa, California, where you’ll also find the Charles M. Schulz Museum and Research Center, which is dedicated to the Peanuts creator.

The nearest airport is San Francisco International Airport (SFO), or about 86 miles. This is a 2-and-a-half hour drive. Although there are ride-hailing options in the Healdsburg region, I would recommend renting a car for convenience.
