Recently, the United States Department of State issued a travel advisory For Mexico on August 12 at Level 2 which means “Exercise Enhanced Caution.” The alert warns travellers of “many violence crimes” that occur in Mexico. It also mentions terrorism and kidnapping.
The countrywide Level 2 advisory It is not as alarming as it may seem, but it’s still below Level 3 “Reconsider Travel”, and Level 4 “Do Not Travel.” That said, travelers should be advised that several states within Mexico are at the Level 4 of “do not travel” including Colima, Guerrero, Michoacán, Sinaloa, Tamaulipas, and Zacatecas, according to a U.S. State Department map.
The advisory specifically mentions “homicide, kidnappings and carjackings” as well the terror threat within the country.
Travelers visiting areas of Mexico covered by the travel advisory may find that they are not able to get much assistance if something goes wrong. The advisory states that the U.S. Government has limited capacity to assist in many areas of Mexico.
United States Embassy Mexico offers helpful advice for travelers who are planning a trip to Mexico. Travelers should not bring in e-cigarettes or weapons such as swords or fireworks unless they have a government permit. Use rideshare apps to arrange ground transport or use registered companies instead of calling a random taxi or taking a ground transport. The government also advises against driving at night between cities or rural areas.
U.S. officials also encourage travelers to cooperate when approached by them. “When approaching a checkpoint, be cooperative,” reads the advisory. Avoid any aggressive behavior. “Fleeing can lead to violence and suspicion.”
