Los Angeles 2025 started with two devastating wildfires Assaulting from opposite directions. The Palisades Fire devastated Malibu and Pacific Palisades while the Eaton Fire inundated Altadena, a community located 35 miles away. Both fires started on Jan. 7, but weren’t fully contained until late in the month. The Palisades Fire led to 12 deaths, and the Eaton Fire destroyed 9,413 homes.
Recovery is still ongoing 11 months after the disaster. “There has been significant progress and effort to streamline rebuilding and recovery in the impacted areas of Altadena and the Pacific Palisades,” Adam Burke, president and CEO of the Los Angeles Tourism & Convention Board, told Travel + Leisure. We’re grateful for all the support from all over the world, as well as the part that the local travel and tourism industry has played in helping to recover.
The two communities are both located in the same area Los Angeles County’s 4,084 square miles, the tourism board noted the fires affected less than 5 percent of the region—and major attractions remain open. Burke told T+L that since tourism is a major driver of local business sales and tax revenue, it is important to keep visiting Los Angeles, whether for business or leisure.
What’s Open in Los Angeles After the Wildfires
Most major attractions in Los Angeles have now reopened despite the tragic circumstances. That includes the city’s leading museums—the Getty Center, Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), Skirball Cultural Center, Academy Museum of Motion Pictures. The Broad—along with Universal Studios HollywoodBeaches like Santa Monica, Venice and Malibu, vibrant neighborhoods such as Downtown L.A. Silver Lake, Chinatown Koreatown and the Valley.
Altadena celebrated the reopening recently of its community center. Altadena Town and Country Club The main shopping center is located in the city. Pacific Palisades & Malibu are located on the coast. Getty Villa Museum—set in a Roman-style country home and filled with Greek and Roman antiquities—is welcoming visitors again after a close call with the flames. Los Angeles is planning for the opening of major attractions in 2026, such as the David Geffen Galleries at LACMA Then, there is the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art. While also preparing for major events such as the NBA All-Star Game, which will be held at the Intuit Domes in February; matches of the FIFA World Cup in 2026 at SoFi Stadium; and the U.S. Women’s Open, to be held in Pacific Palisades on June 6th.
Rebuilding still ongoing in some areas
Some streets in both areas are still being cleaned up, so visitors need to proceed with caution. Altadena is still dealing with the aftermath of severe damage. Charles White Park The mall is currently undergoing reconstruction, and it is anticipated to reopen around 2026. In Pacific Palisades’ main shopping district Palisades VillageThe reopening of the, which is currently closed, is planned for next year. Both communities will host Christmas tree and Menorah light-up events in the interim to bring residents closer together.
Burke said that visitors should be aware that the Altadena area and Pacific Palisades are still recovering from the wildfires. They are asked to respect the residents and avoid the areas where they are re-building.

Burke also said that Los Angeles Tourism’s partnership with the American Red Cross, California Fire Foundation, Kind Traveler. The Change Reaction Donations to these well-respected relief funds, which have supported recovery efforts thus far, are still welcomed. Shopping online with small L.A. based businesses is another way to make a meaningful contribution. Many of these businesses rely heavily on the support of non-locals.
Visitors can make a difference by spending their money in a way that is intentional. Supporting local businesses in Malibu, Pasadena, the Palisades, and Altadena—and choosing independently owned hotels and restaurants—can make a major difference.
