    China’s pipeline is relatively stable

    Lodging Econometrics’ (LE’s) Q2 2025 Hotel Construction Pipeline Trend Report has revealed that China’s construction pipeline stands at 3,733 projects/672,224 rooms at the close of the second quarter.

    China has 2712 projects with 482 138 rooms currently under construction. The majority of projects in China’s pipeline of hotel construction in Q2 are in the construction stage. The number of projects scheduled to begin construction within the next year is 352 projects/62 292 rooms. Meanwhile, 669 projects/127 794 rooms are still in the planning stages.

    The second quarter saw 192 construction projects/30.570 hotel rooms. This quarter, the combined total of hotel renovations and conversions to new brands reached an all-time project high at 213 initiatives/38,661 bedrooms, up by 3% YOY.

    The upper-midscale chain scale continues to lead China’s pipeline with 1,194 projects/182,541 rooms, representing 32% of all projects in the total pipeline. This quarter the upscale scale saw new project totals as well as new room totals. It grew to 1,072 rooms/225,407 projects, an increase of both 9% and 3% year-over-year. Together, the upscale and upper-midscale chain scales account for 61% of projects and 61% of rooms in China’s construction pipeline. The luxury scale is 257 projects/56.882 bedrooms.

    Chengdu had the most projects at the end of Q2, with 143 projects/25 331 rooms. Shanghai is next with 124 projects/22 602 rooms. Guangzhou is next with 114 project/23,143 room, followed by Hangzhou with 100 project/19,968 room, and Xi’an, with 86 projects/15292 rooms.

    In China, 322 hotels with 48,794 bedrooms opened during the first half year of 2025. An additional 834 hotels (122,068 beds) are forecast to open between Q3 and Q4. LE analysts expect 1,156 hotels with 170,862 new rooms to be open by 2025’s end. In 2026, LE analyst’s forecast 769 more new hotels opening 135138 rooms. The LE forecast for 2027 new hotel openings predicts 656 hotels with 125686 rooms.
