Kati Thanda–Lake Eyre only makes an appearance once in a generation, when conditions are just right. The lake is now filled with water thanks to recent flooding. You can see it by following these steps.

Most of the Time Kati Thanda–Lake Eyre isn’t a lake at all—rather, it’s a desolate expanse, flat, blindingly white, and silent. The lake becomes alive every few years after heavy rains fill distant rivers. Flora and fauna are brought with it. Birds in thousands arrive, wildflowers are blooming, and visitors come to view the lake. surreal pink-and-orange-colored lake This only occurs once every generation.

This once-in-a generation event is taking place right now.

Kati Thanda–Lake Eyre started filling in early May 2025 following record-breaking floods, making it the fourth time in 160 years that Kati Thanda Lake Eyre is flowing with water. This is the highest amount of water that the lake will have seen in six-years.

Kati Thanda–Lake Eyre is located within Kati Thanda-Lake Eyre National Park in South Australia. It is the lowest point in the country. largest salt lakeThe lake is 89 miles long and 48 miles wide. When the water level is low or absent, it looks like a shimmering salt pan that extends for miles. But when it floods, as it is now, the lake becomes a breeding site for species that are tolerant of salty waters, such as waterbirds, fish, and shrimp. Wildflowers cover the floodplains, adding a cherry to the cake.

The most stunning visual is when the water starts to evaporate, and the lake changes color from a light pink and orange due to a pigment that’s found in certain types of salt-loving alga.

It’s not easy to see the pink waters that are the Kati Thanda – Lake Eyre. You should fly from Adelaide Airport to Coober Pedy Airport. Two routes lead to the park. You’ll need four-wheel-drive and it takes over five hours. Booking a tour is the best option due to the remoteness and rough roads. By arranging a scenic tour, you can see the pink color of Kati-Thanda-Lake Eyre.

The best time to visit Kati Thanda-Lake Eyre National Park is between April and October (in Australia’s winterWhen there is more water in the lakes, the temperature is cooler, and the wildlife is in abundance.
