Jana Smith has been appointed general manager of The Mining Exchange Hotel in Colorado Springs. With over two decades of hotel management experience, Smith will oversee all hotel operations and lead the continued revitalization of the historic property under the management of Practice Hospitality.
Smith’s leadership experience includes roles at prestigious properties like Brush Creek Ranch, St. Regis Deer Valley and W Seattle. She has led a variety of impactful initiatives and driven operational excellence across hotels, from historic landmarks to modern luxury retreats, throughout her career. Her most recent position was as general manager of The Brown Palace Hotel in Denver. She improved profitability and raised guest satisfaction scores significantly.
Her appointment coincides with a crucial time for the Mining Exchange Hotel as Practice Hospitality continues its multi-phase renovation of the property. Management company Practice Hospitality is known for giving new life to historic hotels. They are now transforming the historic downtown landmark into a vibrant destination that will appeal to both locals and tourists. Smith’s expertise in enhancing heritage properties makes her the perfect person to lead this next chapter, and to bring Practice’s philosophy of putting people first to life.
Smith stated that this role was a “professional highlight as well as a personal return home.” “As an old-time Colorado resident I’m proud of my role in shaping the next chapter of the iconic hotel, and promoting the best of Colorado Springs by providing thoughtful, people oriented hospitality.
Oro, Oro’s much-anticipated Italian restaurant at the hotel, is a key element in this transformation. Oro opened its doors on April 26, bringing a new perspective in the culinary world to Colorado Springs. This is Smith’s first major venture. Golden Hour, a high-craft indoor/outdoor bar with a courtyard, and BLK MGK, a specialty coffee shop are also part of this property’s expanding portfolio of guest-focused concept. Together, these additions reflect the hotel’s continued investment in Colorado Springs—fostering new jobs, creating opportunities for local purveyors and strengthening the destination’s positioning for both leisure and business travelers.
Klaudio Simic said that Jana’s appointment was emblematic of Practice Hospitality’s philosophy, which is bold leadership, purposeful service and the belief in transformation through people. “Her passion to create exceptional stays will play a key role as we build the momentum at the hotel.”
