    • The U.S. Department of State updated its travel advisor for Italy recently.
    • Due to terrorist threats, the reissued advisor keeps Italy on Level 2: Exercise Enhanced Caution.
    • Italy has been ranked number one by the State Department of the United States since 2022.

As well as the summer travel season As travelers prepare to travel to Europe, the U.S. wants to ensure that they are aware of the dangers associated with terrorism.

Recent travel advisories from the U.S. Department of State for Italy have warned travelers to take extra precautions due to the threat of terrorist attacks. The U.S. Department of State has issued a travel advisory for Italy, recommending that travelers exercise increased caution due to the threat of terrorism. Since April 2022, Italy has been ranked as Level 2.

The advisory warns that there is a risk of terrorist violence in Italy, including terrorist acts and other activities. The warning states: “Terrorists could attack without much or any notice.”

The advisory warns of common terrorist targets, including popular tourist attractions, transportation centers and shopping malls, local government buildings, churches, sports events, parks and sporting venues, as well as schools, airports and other public places. It is advised that tourists should be on alert and check local media to find out the latest news. As of now, there is not a specific terror threat or plot.

The State Department’s report for 2023 Country Reports on Terrorism There were no terrorist incidents in Italy during that year. The report says that “domestically, Italy aggressively pursued and prosecuted terror suspects as well as regularly deported non-Italian nationals due to security concerns related to terrorism.” Italian law enforcement is able to detect and prevent terrorist activity and links within the country.  Authorities use these capabilities to combat terrorist recruitment, radicalization, violence and networking.  “Law enforcement agencies and intelligence services work together and meet regularly to discuss terrorist threats and exchange information.”

This warning should not discourage travelers from visiting Italy this summer. The advisory should only serve to remind travelers to be alert and aware of their surroundings. This is only a guide, especially in the case of countries that are ranked Level 2. It is only a guide, especially for countries ranked at Level 2.

Belgium, Germany France, Denmark, Sweden Spain and The Netherlands are other countries in Europe with a Level 2 rating and a greater risk of possible terrorist activity. The United Kingdom is also ranked Level 2.

Travelers to the U.S. should enroll in State Department’s Smart Traveler Enrollment program (STEP), to receive alerts and messages from the local U.S. embassy.
