The Impact of Climate Change: Why Winter Destinations Must Reinvent Theirselves.
In 2023, the World Sleep Society highlighted that sleep deprivation has a negative impact on cognitive abilities, emotional well-being and productivity. Innovative solutions such as AI-powered sleep trackers and smart bedding have been implemented to address this issue and better cater to guests’ needs while improving business results and customer satisfaction in hotels. Travelers are now looking for hotels that will promote relaxation and quality sleep. In order to improve sleep quality for guests and boost revenue, the hospitality sector has adopted AI-powered sleep monitors and innovative bedding such as Westin’s Heavenly Bed and Atour and Huazhu’s smart pillows.
Why sleep quality matters: The link between guest satisfaction and hotel success
As the competition within the hotel industry grows, quality sleep is becoming a core brand competency. According to research, 65% of Americans consider the quality and comfort of the mattress to be a key factor in their overall hotel experience. Yunnan University conducted a study that found that guest room quality is an important factor in determining the satisfaction of guests with hotels. All of these data support previous findings about the importance sleep quality has in hotel services.
AI-Powered sleep technology: elevating hotel comfort
Hoteliers use AI-tracked smart mattresses and noise-cancelling devices to improve the quality of guest sleep (Karagiannis, 2024). These technologies are integrated into property management systems (PMS), allowing automated temperature adjustments and noise levels to be adjusted according to the guest’s preferences. This results in enhanced energy efficiency and customized sleep experiences. This automated system allows hotels to optimize resource management, reduce costs and provide superior service while reducing expenses. Peninsula Hotels utilizes sensors that instantly adjust temperature in rooms. The Westin Hotel chain has improved its bedding. These technologies improved customer satisfaction, giving hotel brands a competitive edge.
IoT Smart Sleep: Personalizing your Hotel Experience
AI and IoT technology combine to bring about new sleep technologies in hotels. The Sleep Sense AI mattress used in luxury hotels monitors guest sleep patterns and adjusts firmness, temperature and elevation to provide optimal comfort. (AI Sleep, n.d.). Bryte smart sleep pods with IoT integration use biometrics to personalize sleep (Kickham 2021). Peninsula Hotels installed a smart sleep tracking system that tracks sleep patterns and adjusts temperature, humidity, light levels, etc. through sensors. This improves sleep quality. IHG’s luxury brand have implemented lighting systems that simulate sunrise and sundown to help business travelers deal with jet lag. Smart sleep systems are a new trend in hotel innovations, as they improve both the accommodation and the quality for guests.
In order to improve the experience of visitors, it is necessary to invest a lot of money. The hotels must spend money to implement AI-driven sleep technology, sensor-based rooms changes, and system integration training. The hotels that implement sleep-enhancing technology achieve higher guest satisfaction scores, more repeat bookings, and higher room rates. These results lead to an increase in return on investment.
Sleep Technology: A Business Model for Hotels
Sleep technology is evolving to produce revenue streams, not improve guest experiences. The hotels promote these innovations with exclusive wellness programs and premium room upgrades to make quality sleep seem luxurious. The “Alchemy of Sleep” program at Rosewood provides customers with meditation and sleep coaching and customized pillows as part of their premium sleep services (ROSEWOOD HOTELS & RESORTS LAUNCHES ALCHEMY OF SLEEP RETREATS, INSPIRING GUESTS TO IMPROVE THEIR STATE OF REST, n.d.). Four Seasons hotels and Westin offer “sleep room” upgrades with noise reduction and smart lighting.
The hotel industry creates revenue streams through subscription programs for sleep wellness and expensive sleep packages which combine smart bedding, spa treatments and wellness consulting. These approaches are used by the hotel industry to generate new revenue streams through travelers who prioritize sleep. Westin’s Heavenly Bed, which was launched in 1999, has enjoyed significant commercial success, with more than 300,000.000 mattresses and one million pillows sold since then (Palanza 2019, 2019). Atour and H World, two Chinese hotel brands, let their customers try customized pillows before selling them (Bai 2025).
Data-Driven Sleep Solutions: Unlocking New Profit Opportunities
AI-driven sleep customization generates revenue streams which extend beyond the sale of products. The hospitality sector works with Bryte Eight Sleep, SleepScore Labs, and SleepScore to embed smart bed technology, along with AI powered sleep-tracking and environmental adjustment systems (Hotel Sleep Experience giveaway, n.d.). These partnerships are used by the hotel industry to enhance guest experiences and market sleep optimization as an expensive service.
The collection of biometric data poses privacy and security issues for hotels. Hotels must establish data policies allowing guests to opt-in or out of sleep tracking, while still adhering to GDPR and CCPA regulations. Park Hyatt New York uses past guest preferences for adjusting lighting and mattress firmness. AI sleep therapy also generates lifestyle-based suggestions to improve rest (Karagiannis 2024).

AI and IoT sleep technology allows hotels to provide highly customized and deeply engaging experiences to their customers. Hotels can leverage the innovative sleep solutions to create new revenue streams and build customer loyalty. In the coming decade, the hotel industry will be transformed by the combination of AI-powered sleep solutions and biofeedback systems. Hotels that invest in energy-efficient technology and data-driven optimization can achieve business sustainability over the long term while meeting market demand for sleep environments validated by science.
