Japan: The luxury brand Imperial Hotel is opening its fourth hotel in Kyoto in spring 2026.
Originally built in 1936 by architect Tokusaburo Kimura, the Yasaka Kaikan was once a venue for theatre performances.
Led by Obayashi Corporation – the same Japanese construction company that built the Yasaka Kaikan – will see the building transformed into a 55-room hotel.
Many original features will be retained such as 16,387 exterior tiles, and traditional Japanese techniques such as ikedori The use of “live capture”, whereby materials are removed from the environment without being damaged, and then reused, will be integrated throughout.
Once completed, the hotel’s amenities will include a restaurant, bar, spa, fitness centre, and swimming pool.

In April 2025 the Imperial Hotel in Kyoto became a member The Leading Hotels of the World.
The property will be completed by October 2025, with an opening date of spring 2026.
The Imperial Hotel in Kamikochi is the first new addition to the Imperial Hotels portfolio in 30 years.
