Rishiri Uni, the highest quality uni in Japan, is a rare find. The kombu that is so famous in Rishiri provides it with nutrients. I love that the delicious food eco-system leads to more delicious foods.
You can crack sea urchins open at Kamui Beach if the weather is right. The water was too rough on the day we went, but they had simulated it offshore.
I chose one that was very active and was mesmerized at the spines it was waving. It was a little embarrassing, as I don’t usually eat my own food. But I had to try this uni if I wanted to visit Rishiri Island. I would’ve done it multiple times, if I stayed for longer. If I could do it again, I’d clear my schedule to only include this itinerary.
Pro Tip: This activity is seasonal from June to August (harvest is prime in July–August).
