Hôtel Royal and Hôtel Ermitage, Evian Resort’s historic hotels, are pleased to announce that they have obtained the Clef Verte (Green KeyEco label is the world’s first certification for sustainable tourism in hotels and restaurants. This prestigious certification recognises the tangible actions taken by the hotel in terms of energy efficiency, waste minimisation, responsible consumption, and increasing awareness of eco friendly practices.
In a chart built around five pillars, the initiatives for the environment are outlined: Biodiversity and Resources, Sustainable Sourcing, Social Responsibility, and Energy. For each of these categories, concrete actions are provided.
1. The creation of an ecosystem protected within the park
The 47 acre grounds are an oasis of biodiversity. The LPO (League for the Protection of Birds), an official sanctuary since 2011, is home to nesting box, insect hotels, flowering fields, and wildlife inventories. The use of pesticides is not allowed, nor is hunting. Green space that is vibrant, educational, and protected, while being in harmony with local environment.
2. Water and waste management that is smart
Evian Resort implemented an efficient water-management system that includes rainwater collection, a weather-based irrigation system and water-saving devices and mulching in the guest rooms.
In addition, the waste is sorted and upcycled. Food waste is also composted.
3. Green energy and responsible mobility
A large portion of the hotels’ heating comes from a district heating system that uses wood, a local renewable energy. A number of energy-efficient improvements have been made, such as the installation and upgrading of LED lighting systems, motion sensors, climate control, and insulation. Evian Resort has a fleet electric cars and bikes available to guests, and charging stations are also available.
4. Locally sourced products
Chef Patrice Vander, who is at the helm of the Hôtel Royal’s kitchens, favours local, seasonal produce from sustainable farming. The kitchen garden, which is 3,000m2, supplies ingredients for the kitchens. Organic honey is also produced on-site. The fine dining restaurants Les Fresques Ecotable has awarded the restaurant certification for its sustainable cuisine with a strong local focus.
5. Staff and the local community benefit from social initiatives with a lasting impact
