CBPeople in Britain tend to go south for their holidays, usually to Spain, France or Italy, because the climate is warmer. The British don’t travel north. People usually talk about South America, South Africa or Asia when they discuss adventure. It seemed like a great idea to travel around Europe by ferry. The countries are all connected but still very different.
What is the place that surprised you the most when you visited it?
EMThe area was in Finland A day’s drive from Helsinki. The wetlands were huge, with hundreds of tiny rocky islets. We went on a beautiful old boat. Charley, me and our cameramen were dropped on the island overnight. We pitched our tents.
CBEwan made dinner that night. We used the shovel for this local, gooey pudding with lots of jam and sugar.
EMWe open our tents in the morning and it looks like paradise. We went for an evening swim, because there were no other people around.
CBIn the loft we were in Norway. We were all crammed in. We were all crammed in there, but we could still see the sky. It was an hour earlier than our arrival. When you’re traveling with family, you can’t do this because you are worried about getting somewhere. It’s not important when we’re just together.
How can you ensure that you experience the real essence of each place?
CB: When we plan our route, we search for events we really want to do. We planned to go to the snowmobile races and other events that were on certain dates. Many things are random. We were in Germany and there was a marching band shooting rifles. We stopped for coffee and that’s how it happened. They had been binge-watching for two days. They were eager to share their passion. Just be open.
