The third consecutive year, Dollywood The crown has been awarded America’s Favorite Theme Park by the National Amusement Park Historical Association (NAPHA)—and no, this isn’t just a sweet hometown win. Dollywood, a colorful and cheerful amusement park in Tennessee, has once again beaten titans such as Disneyland You can also find out more about the following: Universal Orlando Resort. They are also not just casual visitors to amusement parks: these are true enthusiasts of the rides or die. In 2024, the average NAPHA vote-getter “has visited 13 parks and has clocked up roller coasters in over 130 parks throughout their lifetime.” The amusement industry pays attention to what they say.

Dollywood is a hidden gem in the foothills. Smoky Mountains in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, isn’t just a park. Dolly Parton has poured her heart and soul into 160 acres of coasters. There’s also gospel music, crafts and mountain magic. This is a place where thrills, tenderness and winding roller coasters coexist. Dollywood, which opened in 1986, has evolved into a destination that is rooted in storytelling, joy and good old Tennessee hospitality.

Then, in 2022. Condé Nast Traveler caught up with Dolly herself to get her top tips for doing Dollywood right—from the must-try treats to the rides pulled straight from her childhood dreams.

The story has been updated since it was first published.

Where to stay during a trip to Dollywood

    Get a funnel cake

Cinnamon bread is the most famous snack in Dollywood. This delicious cinnamon-flavored bread is baked daily in an open kitchen, at the Grist Mill located in Craftsman’s Valley. And—served warm with drizzled icing or apple butter for dipping—the pull-apart bread really is worth waiting in the predictably long lines. For Parton, however, it’s the funnel cake that takes the cake. She said, “The park’s food is excellent.” “I love the funnel cakes—I’m always sending out for funnel cakes.” Stop by Splinter’s Crossroads offers deep-fried funnel cakes made to order, with toppings such as Fruity Pebbles and strawberries.

    Watch a show

Dollywood’s entertainment lineup is impressive for a theme-park that celebrates a music industry icon. Every day, the parks venues can host up to 50 musical performances, ranging from string quartets and bluegrass bands. She recommends that you catch a few of the concerts, but particularly Harmonies of the Heart.

Parton says that she has a show where her family members are featured. It’s like my life story and having my family and friends involved is exciting.

Harmonies of the Heart includes two of Dolly’s nieces, Heidi Lou and Jada Star, as well as her cousin Shelley, and her family friend Barry J—all of whom refer to her as “Aunt Granny” in the stories they share on stage, in between original songs accompanied by string musicians.

New York City based Gazillion BubblesIt is a mind-bending show of bubble magic.

Craftsman Valley is a section of Dollywood.

Leave your phone in the resort

Parton says, “I’d like you to remember how much fun and enjoyment you had while here.” “Love each moment” is a good thing.

To do that, she suggests leaving your phone behind—instead rely on an old-school digital camera Capture memories You won’t spend half your day uploading photos to Instagram, when you could be listening to bluegrass and eating funnel cake.
