UK: The British chain of Indian restaurants Dishoom has expanded into overnight accommodation with Permit Room Lodgings. It will open in June 2025, above its Permit Room restaurant on Portobello Road in London.
This project is a collaborative effort between Dishoom, a design studio in London and Macaulay Sinclair.
On the top floor, there are two bedrooms, each with an en-suite bathroom, as well as a separate lounge. This design combines Bombay style with Notting Hill.
Shamil and Kavi Thakhr, cofounders of Dishoom and Permit Room stated: “We are so happy to have Permit Room open in London. You’ll probably see us at the bar more than we would like, drinking Orange Wine Margaritas.
When we were thinking about the Portobello Permit Room we wanted to stay true to Bombay and the warmth you feel the moment you enter. What if our guests could be transported to a romantic Bombay house? Our Permit Room Accommodations were born out of nostalgia and a desire to look after our guests to the best of their ability.
The interiors are characterized by arched windows, parquet flooring, antique Bombay furniture, and finishes of brass, marble, and wood.
Mauli Rituals provides amenities for the bathrooms, including king-sized beds. The bar offers complimentary chai and guests can browse magazines and vinyls curated by local shops like Rough Trade West or Books for Cooks.
Permit Room Lodgings provides a breakfast-in-bed service, as well as a London personalised guide designed by the Dishoom Team.
Artwork in the Lodgings as well as the dining room on the 1st floor has been curated with Rajiv Menon contemporary, a Los Angeles based gallery that features South Asian artists like Mustafa Mohsin Ahsanjavaid and Maya Varadaraj.
Menon stated: “Art is supposed to permeate the culture at large and find new connections.” This partnership allows us to introduce some of the most promising young South Asian artists in an open, vibrant environment.
The Permit room lodgings are available with a minimum of two nights and a maximum of seven nights.
