    Crater Lake, Oregon will close in 2029 after this summer

    • Crater Lake and the popular Cleetwood Cove Trail will be closed to swimmers, boaters, and hikers until 2029.
    • The lake will not be open to tourists until 2029.
    • Due to damage from recent wildfires, several other trails and road within the park remain closed.

    Visitors to Oregon are hopeful Crater Lake National Park Travel plans for the summer may need to be reconsidered. 

    Crater Lake is the deepest Lake in the United States. It will be closed during the summer seasons of 2026-2027-2028 to boat tours, swimmers, and other water activities. The summer of 2025 will be the last chance for outdoor enthusiasts to enjoy the lake in several years.

    During the closure, the 1.1-mile-long Cleetwood Cove Trail (the most heavily used pathway in the park) will be rehabilitated, the Cleetwood Cove Marina will get some structural upgrades, and high-risk rockfall zones will be mitigated. The National Park Service has said that the lake would reopen for boat tours and visitors in 2029 if the construction timelines and objectives are met. 

    The park will begin construction in 2026. a news release from the park said. “Due the extent [of] Trail closures are required during the summer seasons of 2027 and 2028 due to the short construction season and the need for work completion.

    Crater Lake National Park, located about 270 mile south of Portland in Oregon, has several park closures due to damage caused by Middle Fork Fire. The North Entrance Road and Rim Drive will be closed for the season until June or July; the Bald Crater Loop, Bert Creek, and Boundary Springs Trails are closed until further notice.
