Comfort, Texas is a small (2,000-person) town located about two hours southwest from Austin, Texas Hill Country. It was founded by German immigrants. freidenker In the 1850s (freethinkers), who settled in the area following the German Revolution. The freethinkers sought freedom in America. They valued reason and democracy above religious and political authoritarianism. As an ode, they named the town Comfort to reflect their desire for a comfortable, peaceful and tranquil life. Freethinkers, a group of intellectuals, argued for equal rights and the abolitionist slavery. They also rejected secession. They were loyal during the Civil War to the Union and this cost them many lives. In honor of their sacrifices, the Treue der Union Monument is located on High Street.
The Hill Country was known in the 1940s and 1950s as an international center for mohair and wool. Comfort’s Adolf Stieler, was named the Angora King of the World. In the following decades, tourism and agriculture helped to grow the local economy. Today, the small town Comfort has a wide variety of shops, vineyards and more. It is also designated as a National Historic District. Numerous buildings and sites are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Over 100 buildings are from the early 19th century. Most of them are located downtown.

It’s the brainchild of Bob Young, a doctor-turned-winemaker who fell in love with the wine regions of Europe, South America, and the U.S. as well as the art and science of winemaking. Bending Branch is known for tannat, a grape that grows well in Texas, but it also produces other red, white, and sparkling wines from other varieties, including tempranillo, malbec, and mourvèdre. The winery is open from Thursday to Monday. A new tasting room will be opening this summer.
